Yes, they backed down on requiring a subscription after SUBSTANTIAL backlash from their community. Typically when companies do this, it's not because they see the error in their way, but because they couldn't figure out how to spin it without losing their entire customer base.

Rest assured, Cricut more than likely still has long-term plans to move all users to subscriptions, and this won't be the last time you see the business model pushed. I'd even go so far as to say you're seeing sales on Cricut machines just to undo some temporary damage. I wouldn't put any trust in this company not to simply do this again in a year or two.

Definitely consider that yes they backed down but clearly they're going to try to find ways to nickle and dime users. Their true colors came out and while they were able to fix face right before IPO it's now going to be more about the shareholders and finding ways to monetize users beyond just beyond the machine.

I have been using Cricut and personally would not recommend getting one and going to one of the other styles like Silhouette - not just because of this stunt but because Silhouette has made great strides and is even surpassing Cricut in a variety of areas-for a similar price point.

It does sound as if they reversed their decision, which is good, because my daughter has a Maker. Smilie

Plus Cricut may have reversed that decision, but they've also bricked older devices with software updates.

Oh! Yes I always forget about this aspect thanks for bringing it up!

For those unaware because they lock their systems to the cloud they're able to easily make machines "obsolete" and unusable.

Another reason to consider others that aren't locked down...

If you're considering the Maker, go Silhouette - they're more powerful than Cricut Maker and way less restrictive while at the same price point.
