Just got back from Costa Rica. Stayed there for 10 days and had a blast. I highly recommend visiting this country if you can. I landed in San Jose, got my rental, spent a couple days in San Jose, drove to Arenal in La Fortuna and stayed in the rainforest, visited volcanoes, hot springs, spent, 4 days there. Then went to Tamarindo and relaxed on the beach. 10/10
Grew up in San Jose. Every once in a while, the Mercury News would publish a quick story about another tourist who ended up in Silicon Valley when he thought he was going to Costa Rica.

Don't be that tourist.
went to costa rica for my honeymoon in 2019 and loved every moment. will definitely go back. pura vida!

It really depends on where you eat. Restaurants that cater to americans are indeed expensive. But my favorite meal there was at a mini restaurant that a local couple ran out of their house. 2 dishes with large fruit juices (from fruit they went outside to pick in front of our eyes) and a 20% tip cost us approx. $12.

How much you spend on food, hotels? , also where you luxury or mid-level or budget?

I was there a few years ago with some people that were at one point local. If you go I highly recommend Arenal and Manuel Antonio. You can make the trip rather inexpensive if you plan it out right. We stayed at an AirBNB with a full kitchen so we made our own meals for lunch and some dinner. Breakfast was always eaten at a local Soda, similar to a small diner. Meals there were less than 3 bucks. I do not recommend the beer, and don't go out trying to buy anything imported there, it's way too expensive.

Manuel Antonio has a really cool craft brew house like 40 minutes away, Fuego Brew Co. best spot I have ever been to in my life. Atmosphere was perfect, good music, pretty good food, crisp beer.

Save yourself the trouble and DO NOT make a stop at Mexico City. Pick any US city or even Guatemala or San Salvador.

Why is that? Just curious

What are the COVID restrictions/policies about entering/returning? Does entering require a COVID test or vaccination? Quarantine?

Looks like COVD cases in CR are on the rise: https://www.reuters.com/world/ame...021-05-03/

Btw, flight from LA are pretty good too, around $300 RT for non-stop basic economy.

Went to Costa Rica for honeymoon in 2012. Stayed 10 days. Spent $2K total for two (flew on points). Loved it. Ate the typical food 99% of the time, which was extremely delicious and very cheap. We rented a little Daihatsu 4x4 (rent from reputable local place; ours cost $300 for the whole trip with insurance) and drove around the whole country, staying several nights at different areas. Costa Rica is BEAUTIFUL.

If you're going to drive make sure you get a 4x4 or something with all wheel drive, and GET THE INSURANCE. The roads can be extremely rough, and most are unpaved. Costa Rica is one of those places where traffic rules are just a "suggestion." On more than one occasion we crested the top of a hill only time find something like a family walking with their horses, etc. One time we were in the mountains (dirt road) and someone was coming at us in our lane, forcing us to turn into the ditch. Car slid down ditch and got scraped up pretty good and broke off passenger side mirror. Rental insurance covered everything. When we turned the car in the guy just took our keys and remarked "Good thing you go the insurance!"

Agreed about the 4x4 and insurance. Lots of unpaved roads with huge potholes. It also helps to know how to drive stick.

Good question. I've lived in CR for the past few years. Rainy season is typically early Sep through the end of Oct. June/July and mid to late Nov are my favorite times of years here. So if you get this deal, make sure it's VERY early in Sep. Late November is a better time because everything will be lush after the rains subside.

This is my exact itinerary for August. Can't wait. I found tickets Lax -> SJO for $130 one-way through Avianca and leaving out of Liberia for $250 non-stop.

Where did you stay? I heard you can't flush TP down toilets there.

That's perfect. It was kinda brutal driving from Tamarindo to San Jose (5 hour drive) and did it the day before my flight so I kinda lost a day. LIberia is only an hour away from Tamarindo.

Check my google maps profile. I reviewed all the places I stayed with pics. Highly recommend the place I stayed in La Fortuna. In the middle of the rainforest and fell asleep to the sound of the rainforest. It's very much alive and active.

And yes, you're not suppose to flush TP but I did. It just grosses me out putting it in the bin. That's common is most undeveloped countries including all over Asia, central and South America.

I'd say mid-level. Rooms a night around $100-$200 a night. Spent around $1,500 including car, hotels and food.

I'm guessing the daily temps must be comparable to FL but I'm certain the sun must be scorching.

The only rain forest that I would visit is Hoh !!

Highs were around 80s to 90s but humid. Pack some water if you hike the volcanos. I was sweating up a storm! But I was also coming out of winter from NY. Bring sunscreen and bug spray!

Or you could drive down to Manuel Antonio and take a stroll through the very well preserved forest and see iguanas, tucans, sloths and other animals up close. Amazing country to visit for nature/beach lovers. DON'T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN!!!!!

I wanted to go here really bad but just ran out of time. Definitely on the top of my list when I go back. That and the Caribbean side.
