What if you already have GPU activated for $1, is it still better to let gold expire and then redo it or is it fine just to add more time to gold?
From what I have read, that's how it goes. It needs to run out completely and then you stack the Live months. If you add the months of Live to an existing GPU sub, it will convert those to GPU.
so if you don't mind not getting 2 free games to play per month (I have already played the ones worth playing) or discounts on new games (that's why I'm on SD) - Live Gold doesn't really DO anything anymore

Wait, so I can play online without subscription? I only play fifa and 3 months ago my gold expired. I don't need to buy a new one to continue playing online? Thank you

No. This info is not quite correct. You can play free to play games without xbox live. These are games like Fortnite, Apex, etc.
so I'm clear, I can purchase three of these, add to my existing Xbox account (which currently has no active gold or otherwise account but has in the past), then select the upgrade gold to GPU for $1 promo option currently on my Xbox store page?
Does ps+ include a library of games like gamepass ultimate? Or is that the equivalent of xbox live gold?
I think the hype is that this coverts to yltimate
I can confirm that it works. Just bought 3 codes for 12 months of Gold (36 months total). Loaded them and had the $1 offer to convert to Ultimate on my Xbox console home screen.
Only hiccup was that for some reason it was not letting me convert to Game Pass Ultimate on the Xbox for that $1 offer. I kept getting an error message, so I logged on to Microsoft on my phone and clicked the same $1 offer online and it worked fine.

Only for some games, namely the games that are free to play, here is a list of them: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/04/21/online-multiplayer-free-to-play-games-unlocked/
And to be nit picky, Xbox Live Gold isn't and was never free (AFAIK). Xbox Network (previously Xbox Live Silver) has always been free, and that's the type of membership you need to play the games in the link I provided above.
Funny shit is in Brazil the 12 months GPU end up been $45 after converting to US dollar's. If any of y'all got connections with someone from Brazil is worth asking.

Given that and the recent MS LIVE changes - do I even need Live anymore? Thinking no.
I play Warzone mostly and I think you don't need live anymore
