A few months ago, two friends and I purchased Hero 9s to use during canyon runs and city driving. All three of us were disappointed to learn that most of our clips were cut short and the cameras had shut off due to heat issues.
A quick search of "Hero 9 heat" will show you loads of owners complaining about the same thing. Thermal throttling kicks in and shuts the camera off to protect it. Some owners resort to attaching actual heatsinks to the camera, which is crazy.
Now, I would totally understand (but would still be disappointed) if the camera couldn't handle 80, 90, or even 100* weather. BUT, we were using the cams on a cloudy Los Angeles day, highs being ~65*F back in February. Customer service let me know that I can "point a fan at the Hero to cool the camera" to improve performance. No thanks.
I've had prior Heros, but returned this and will wait for future iterations that can address these issues. Thankfully, their CS is easy to deal with and fully refunded the camera cost and the 1-year subscription.
*Edit: GoPro says that heat issues may be caused by incompatible memory cards, but we confirmed that all three of our SD cards were on GoPro's "approved list."
FWIW, I own two GoPro 9 and it's love/hate relationship. I love the picture quality and the colors (out of the box, I don't edit/color correct). Also horizon leveling and hypersmooth have been excellent. It's my favorite camera for videos.
It used to be very buggy for a few months after release, with frequent shutdowns where I lost some of my videos. Really frustrating. They appear to have fixed most issues with recent firmware updates. Haven't had random shutdowns for a while.
Haven't hit any major overheating issues yet. I've ran it for hours on my chesty harness or with a magnetic mount on the hood of my truck. It was fall/winter/spring time though, so maybe summer climate will stress it out more.
If you really need a GoPro right now, this is a great deal. If you are looking to upgrade from your current one, I would wait until fall.
BTW, I have Sony FDR-100V, DJI Osmo Action, DJI Osmo Pocket (and Pocket 2). I still prefer quality/colors out of GoPro 9. Everyone has their own preferences though.

To be more precise, the main reason for purchasing two Hero 8 was to be able to shoot 4K footage in full 60p in and around a grand piano on stage without disturbing the audience. In terms of size and blending in, they lived up to my expectations. But they shut down within half an hour of recording at room temperature!!
I did a lot of individual testing afterwards and am still appalled about the results: Even at the lowest resolution quality setting, these cameras overheat and shut down every single time within 20 to 40 minutes max. Therefore it's obviously not the high end 4K/60p setting that overheats the chips, it might just be bad programming. And it's heartbreaking to read all these replies here that confirm that this company doesn't even try to fix this issue since it's replicated in version 9.
They should actually advertise that these action cams are only good for a few minutes, more or less depending on surrounding temperatures. So sad seeing such a potentially great product being carelessly crippled by developers who answer to problems with a smokescreen.

As far as 360 goes, I'm personally a big Insta360 One X (and X2) fan - mostly due to the form factor. I don't own either Fusion or Max.

Yes, have that one. The biggest benefit IMO going to the 8 is having the bracket built into the camera.
For $250 though, not worth it. I wouldn't pay more than $200, considering it's been out for a few years now.
I'm happy with my gopro 4 silvers for now.
hopefully the overheating problem can be solved with an update and not a hardware problem. would really hate to see this company go down hill..

It's not new, they've never really addressed it, they just keep piling on random complicated features.
Ours (7 black, and 7 silver) would both overheat after ~30 minutes in direct or indirect sunlight. The only solution we found was to put reflective tape all over the housing (reduce light absorption), and to use external power (the battery discharging was a significant source of heat inside the camera). The clamshell used to mount it trapped heat as well. In our case, we just needed a compact camera in a high-vibration environment, and could run a long USB-C cable to it to supply power.
I would not buy these again. WTF do you need a subscription for to use a camera, sounds like a lame way to sap money from a product after you already sold it. The app always sucked, would randomly not work for no apparent reason, fail to connect. Very very buggy.
