What appears on the label: INGREDIENTS: Water softener, cleaning agents, dishwasher and china protection agent, water, thickening agent and bleach, Chlorine Bleach, Sodium Silicate and Sodium Carbonate

Same results can be achieved running a empty cycle with bleach "OR" vinegar W/hydrogen peroxide.
I'm far from an expert on the matter, but I would assume that the dishwasher cleaners are targeting mineral and other build-ups that come from the water itself over time. Most cleaners have a certain level of alkaline or acid. Regular dishwasher soap probably is one of them, while this would be the other. I could be wrong, but basically this stuff should be targeting long-term build-up.

A regularly-used dishwasher could be considered "clean" from use, but often there will be some discoloration or build-up from minerals in the water, and even from the dishwasher soaps.

What about running an empty cycle with your regular dishwasher cleaner? Will that do anything?

Do you mean regular dishwasher detergent? Yes, it'll waste detergent.

This is dishwasher cleaner, so not sure what you're asking.

Can someone legitimately explain to me how a dishwasher becomes dirty if you're using it regularly and it's in full working order?

Then wouldn't the same minerals build up on all the dishes and silverware if regular detergent is not effective in getting rid of them? The dishwasher is getting washed at the same time as the dishes by the same water and detergent. If there's mineral buildup on the dishwasher, there would be the same buildup on the dishes.
