1) top is biased by humor, helpfulness.. all kinds of things that are not really correlated with typical experience
2) most recent are more randomly distributed across experiences. This allows you to get a feel of what the typical experience is like.
3) if the product has changed in any way this is more likely to be reflected in most recent
So, all this to say, you should sort by most recent. I see those reviews are still lukewarm but i feel more confident now skipping this for that reason, instead of one guy's humorously told tale about an axe head flying away.

WAIT! It's a mini machete! I can do this!
On the other hand, this would only be my second hatchet

For example, knives are designed to cut, so they're made from hardened steel that will get sharp and hold an edge. Hard steel is more brittle, though. Throwing knives are typically made of softer, more flexible steel that has some give to it so they don't break when they are thrown and subject to torque and lateral forces.
Throwing axes are similar, they're weighted for proper rotation and they're built from resilient materials that flex a little without breaking. Additionally, the axe heads are shaped to support biting into the target so they'll stick easier. A single piece of consistent steel or a durable (but replaceable) wood handle is typically better.
There are lots of good options, though. SOG offers a three pack of throwing tomahawks that will run about $70 that are well suited to beginners and will last pretty much forever, for example.

if you want a decent hatchet i noticed harborfreight has one with a solid high carbon steel head that wont explode and a hickory handle for 13 with a lifetime warranty and a cheap machete for about 6 dollars that is an actual full size machete with a bolted tang and a saw back top much better deal than the schrade imo.
