Does anybody know of any retailers that actually carry the 16gb variants? I swear I've only see it from apple and maybe one other retailer at some point

I think only apple offers the 16gb configuration on the macbook air. After waiting for almost a year, i just bought a 16gb air with education discount (too frustrated after disappointing tigerdirect miss). They just dont go on sale.

We had to order my daughter's 16gb through apple. Couldn't find one at a retailer.

Good deal, I ordered this last week from Costco and used $100 coupon. Brought down the price to $999. This is a great laptop even at $1099.

Many of reviewers say 8gb and 16gb is not different majority of work. Go 8gb!

ssd* and even though I agree with you that 8gb is not enough and shouldn't even be considered for this expensive a computer, ssd's won't fail after a couple hundred cycles. I'm using a 6 year old ssd daily thats half the size of this and it hasn't failed.

also- ssds can't be effectively utilized as ram since ram runs at way higher speeds

That's been disproven. Also mac os can be run on an external disk.

The 16GB variant is a BTO (Built-to-Order) variant from Apple, hence you would not usually see these selling at e/retail stores.
The retail variants are 8G+256G and 8G+512G.

Although I did see stores like BHPhoto selling it, its a rarity.
