After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

The ones who have actually used them personally say 8 is enough for most people.

Another very expensive problem with today's Apple. Prior to 2016, you could buy a computer and later upgrade it by adding more RAM or storage later once your needs change. My daily driver is a mid 2012 MBPro. I've doubled the RAM and added a SSD over the years.

Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

No thanks, Apple.

Right, but I think as far as future-proofing, 16gb will be a better bet. I got my macbook in 2013 when 4gb RAM was considered "pretty damn good" and even tho it still works great now, I do wish I had spent a bit more at the time to get 8gb, esp bc I cant add memory now. Likewise in this case, I'd say getting 16gb will just help keep the machine working well for years to come.

if you are into LOGIC PRO X (music production) and into 4k video encoding using FINAL CUT PRO ....16GB is better than 8GB

I think the issue is web browsing. Modern browsers have given up any form of RAM efficiency. After a days browsing (on Windows of course), I'm at 5GB just due to the browser. I don't run Mac, but I can imagine it will run into a similar wall (especially considering all browsers mostly use the same engine). For the asking price, it would have felt better to see it with 16GB instead of 8GB (at 699 starting). I might still consider this deal, but there is little future proofing here.

for most uses 8gb is enough. if you have multiple monitors and keep lots of tabs/apps open, 8gb is not enough. I had 8gb and sold it to get the 16gb because it kept slowing down on me. 16gb is much faster, no slow downs any more.

Picked up this M1 Mac model 2 months ago at this same sales price at Costco. Awesome mac computer at even 8gb performs well for my needs. One of the best computers I have!
