The ones who have never used it and are just guessing say it isn't enough.
Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

Note that if you get one, DO NOT turn on Filevault. It corrupted, rendering updates impossible.
Plus, the inability to upgrade components on current Mac computers is a huge jump-the-shark blunder. This is a 2-decade Mac user writing this.
For those who like cars with idiot lights, a unit like this might work for you.

Apple should have called Big Sur "Mac Vista."
For comparison: I still have a 2011 Mac mini that works perfectly fine with an older version of macOS as a home server and still can be used for other tasks such as web browsing, emails, light processing, etc.
I have a corporate issued 2017 MacBook Pro that can handle whatever I toss at it with 8GB of memory and integrated Intel graphics. I'll admit it runs warm if I need to do anything intensive but I tend to offload heavy graphical work to an external Blackmagic eGPU.
I have two M1 related Mac's (Air and mini) that both have 16GB's of memory that blow through anything I toss at them and will clearly work well into the future.
So I'm just trying to understand how your Mac was outlasted by a budget laptop when basic Mac's can last for a decade or more without any problem.

The macbook pro has been too sluggish to even browse the web as of 2015. Thats 3 years of OK performance, and then plunged into apple update hell. I could swap to an ssd... But why upgrade something this antiquated when i can just buy a new one that blows it out of the water?
Hence my question: will 8gb be enough for today, or just the next 2-3 years when apple decides to rob me again?

Furthermore, my experience with the ARM architecture is that it tends to be more ram-hungry than wintel (or MacTel for that matter).
For example: I have a 2011 mac mini with 16GB of ram and a quad core (ancient generation) i7 and I consider myself to be a "heavy user" yet I usually consume 10 to 14GB or so worth of RAM (due in part to me "offloading" most busy work to a windows vm farm. Anyways, I am not convinced that a 16GB M1 would have anywhere near 2GB of ram free with similar usage, let alone the software compatibility problems.
Can someone help dispel my assumptions here ?
People who say it's enough probably run only 1 main app at a time and just a few browser tab in the background and they probably have good user habit of closing down stuffs. But if you do not run any heavy app but open a couple dozens of browser tabs, especially if those tabs include demanding sites with a lot of tracking going on, you may experience the occasional stutter while a window machine with slower cpu but 16gb won't have this problem.
I have friend who is still using a window machine with 4gb ram and still be productive. They are just used to the speed. But if I have to use that machine it will be torture for me.
If you look at the price of pre-built windows pc currently thou, $600 for this one is still a good deal if you don't ever need discrete GPU. It's just not upgradable. Good for a secondary or guest pc. Costco also add 1 additional year warranty for you. If you use Costco Citi card, you may get another 2 year.
So this is the only M1 machine i would buy because the risk is low with this price. If I need a stronger Apple machine, I will wait for the next gen.
