These USB powered ones are NOT bright. Keep in mind the max amount of power that can be sent through USB, which, from what I understand less than 18w. This is more like 5w.

No these tripods are really flimsy. You're better off buying some $20 standalone tripod.

I am probably late to the game, but I'm looking for a ring light and I have seen so many posted here on SD. Is there one you recommend? I thought the price was good for this one.

Depends on what you're using it for, but overall look for one that's NOT USB powered.

For example, I have this [amazon.com] and it's extremely bright, but large (and overkill). I use it for primarily portraits, and food lighting.

I went with this RGB ring light with wireless remote control instead:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JMDH3DQ/

Bought it for about $17 not too long ago. Didn't need a tripod since I have a suction cup mount I'm using to attach the ring light on the back of my 27" monitor. My primary use is for Zoom meetings. I don't have a whole lot of light in my work area and this provides more than enough lighting at the 2nd to the lowest brightness level. I think it has 10 brightness levels.

Anyone with a DIY solution to make a lighting solution using the standard 40W-equivalent LED bulbs?

The ~5w clarification is true, don't expect to light up an entire room with this thing, but that's not the point of this light.

In my experience these usb ring lights are bright enough to make a substantial change when the subject is less than 8' away.

These are not pro ring lights, they are for video chats and youtube/tik tok etc,
These lights are for the type of video you take with your phone's front facing camera.

Perhaps higher bulb lumens is more appropriate vs higher watts when speaking of brightness levels especially with LED bulbs.

Nice short article: https://www.westinghouselighting....umens.aspx

Can't find where they state the power source is USB. As I know, most of this type of LEDs use their own power adapters to operate. I mostly use 3 set of similar LED panels to take product Photos. They make my job much easier.

You can just put a diffuser in front of it. Either a flash diffuser, or tape some white photo paper in front of it. Though, the color temperature of the bulb will affect how you look.

The photo shows a USB port.

True, they're not meant to do a lot of lighting - but considering this is on the larger end of ring lights, that 5w is spread over a lot more space, rather than having it concentrated. I also have a USB powered one that's fine for really dark settings, but don't expect it to do much justice improving shadows in a decently bright room.

The photo shows a USB port as the main plug.

You think it's worth it just for the tripod to use with a camera or phone? Don't really care about the light.

What light or telescoping floor lamp would be good to really light up camera? I have the cube, but that's not lighting up a room if there is already some natural light in.

Semi-related, has anyone tried to connect their phone to their computer via USB and use it as a webcam? Not sure how well (or badly) that would work.
