This deal worked for me, but I had a terrible time getting Alexa to order the right thing. I wanted a specific book from a series, and Alexa tried to order the entire series for like $60 and then other random books with titles that were close, but definitely not the right book.

I looked the book up on Amazon on my computer and looked at the URL to see the item ID (looks like "B00514HX3F"). Then I said "Alexa, order B00514HX3F". I doubted whether it would work, but it did! Alexa read off the correct title of the book, indicated that the $5 promo had been applied, and confirmed that I wanted to order it.

Hope that helps anyone who might want to use this promo, but is struggling to get Alexa to cooperate.

Credit is applied at the time you order. In other words, the purchase is discounted by $5. I just ordered a book that is normally $7.29 and it was $2.29; when you order the book, Alexa will state the adjusted price and inform you that the $5 credit was applied before you confirm the purchase.

Here's how you check if the credit applies BEFORE buying!

On any device (including the Alexa app), say this phrase:

She should respond with "(Your book's title) by (your book's author). The Kindle ebook is (price) after a $5.00 Alexa-exclusive ebook credit. Would you like to buy it?"

I've tested a few different books on Echo Dot 3, Echo Show, Echo Show 5, and my Alexa app. This should be foolproof!

The book I personally use most is Quick and Easy Chinese by Nancie McDermott. Good variety and taste for the recipes I've tried. I have the physical copy but I see there is an e-version. I grew up eating traditional Chinese dishes from my Chinese mother, but I think the included recipes would appeal to a wide range of palates.
Thanks. May try it.

Got this to work (with the $5 credit), but it was a real pain. Alexa didn't really understand what I wanted, even though I read the title straight from its description. Ended up having to say something like "buy the book...."

I was able to stack my no-rush shipping credits towards the price. So I bought a $10 priced Kindle book, got the $5 off, and used $5 of my no-rush credits. Net price, $0.00.

Be careful. The book must be sold by Amazon for this credit to apply.
Yep. Just forgot to check seller. Was charged. Told Alexa to cancel the order. Refund can take up to 10 days.

My book was sold by Amazon but they charged me anyways. What a waste of time.

Be careful, if you have Amazon slow shipping credits, they usually get used first. So if it's a $5 book and you have $2 in credit, the $2 will apply first. Can anyone confirm if that's the case here?

Not for me, but it's something to be aware of. I had $6 in freebie credits, and thought similar to you, so used $4.99 on a movie I wanted just to be safe -- had the same fear they'd get used up first.

Had $1.01 leftover, then did the $5 kindle book thing, and I still have the same $1.01 leftover. So it didn't grab my slow shipping credit at all.

That's not my experience at all. I just did this 30 minutes ago. See post #19.

Huh? Your issue was that you ordered from a non-Amazon seller. We're talking about slow shipping credits. Unrelated.

Nope. I ordered from Amazon as my Kindle book seller, and used my slow ship credits to cover the difference. Read my post again.

Ok, now you really have me completely confused with your confusion. First off, it's post #18 not #19 like you said. Second, you purchased a $10 item with $5 slow shipping and $5 from this promo. So how do you know it used your slow ship first?

My point was that if it's a $5 purchase with $2 of slow ship, it'll do $2 slow ship first then $3 promo. So you're left with $2 promo and used up your slow ship. You still don't make sense, that's not your use case.

Well, if the order is above $5, yeah, it should grab the no rush credits. That is logical.

What was being asked is what happens if the order is under $5, which credits get grabbed first. And in my case, it was the kindle promo here as it didn't touch my no rush credits. But in my case it was a 3.99 book, not $10 -- if the book is over $5, and if the buyer has no rush credits, I expect they'd get eaten up. And that's what I assume most would want.

I'm not sure what criteria amazon is using.

The book I purchased is sold by Penguin Random House. And the promo worked fine for me.

I would guess if a title shows as applying no-rush credits, the book is eligible for promotions -- and if it doesn't, maybe not?

Regardless, Alexa told me the promo would be applied before I purchased, with zero due (as it was under $5)... so if folks don't hear that bit about $5 being taken off, don't order.

this is the key. Alexa will tell you the promo applies. otherwise, don't buy.
