I'd like to chalk it up as a uncooperative employee, but the problem was that the website had a Mainstays heater listed but the store carried Pelonis. Just like this heater, Pelonis makes the heater [pelonis.com] and it's just stamped with different house brands. Walmart sells their brand alongside Pelonis, and my store seems to mix stock depending on what they get delivered to the store.
The part #'s between the Mainstays and the Pelonis are off by one character (Mainstays starts with a "W" and Pelonis starts with a "P"). However, the barcodes were identical between the two brands, hence the ability to stock both at any given time. The Walmart employee is instructed to only price match identical items. This is also outlined in their price match policy:
TL;DR - This may still be very YMMV despite the website saying the item is in stock at your store. If you show up and the packaging, part #, etc. isn't 100% identical, prepare for trouble. To be fair, I haven't tried price matching at any other Walmarts so maybe mine is just particularly uncooperative.
