It is a poor headphone amp for 99.5% of headphones. If most people are buying it for that then most are buying the wrong thing.

It has LOTs of power, like you said, but also LOTS of noise relative to good $100-$150 headphone amps and a high likelihood of channel imbalance. The recent Audioscience Review test
[audiosciencereview.com] shows distortion at .012%, Noise at 78dB below signal, and about .5dB L/R channel difference at 5W (likely higher at headphone volumes).
By comparison the $99 Schiit Heresy has .0007% distortion, Noise 103dB below signal, no channel imbalance...and PLENTY of power for 99.5% of all headphones. Plus, the Heresy has an external gain switch, so you do not have to open the chassis anytime you want to switch between high/low sensitivity headphones.

The main selling point of the A-100 is not as an amp to drive speakers, although it does that pretty well, but it has an internal jumper that lets you send the full power of the amp to the headphone jack for hard to drive headphones.

Power Output (headphone output; direct drive mode)
(requires internal jumper; USE WITH CAUTION):

8 Ohms: 50 watts / channel
33 Ohms: 12 watts / channel
47 Ohms: 8.5 watts / channel
150 Ohms: 2.6 watts / channel
300 Ohms: 1.3 watts / channel
600 Ohms: 0.6 watts / channel

I have been using Emotiva amps for many years and they are almost half off at regular price. A 15% discount is solid when compared to similar quality brands at much higher prices.

I am not familiar with the A-100, but looking back on the $6k plus I have spent on Emotiva in the last 15 years I would not be quick to discount this amp.

Consider this 15% discount the equivalent to 65% off other high end brands.

See above.

Their "trigger" mode will cause distortion on every time it's triggered, so you have to keep it on. I thought there was something wrong with my unit, but they RMA'd a unit with the same problems.
