Just to put this in perspective for out-of-towners. JWM in Summerlin is waaay far from the strip and downtown (12-15 miles). It is a great property and resort just not part of the mainstream.

I've stayed here twice for conferences about 5 years apart -- worst "resort" type hotel our conferences have ever used. Last stay was 3 years ago, and IF the conference is ever held there again, I will not attend that year!

The Casino (by design) is in the center of the various wings of the hotel. So you have to walk through it to get anywhere. Anytime before late-afternoon/evening, you won't see a bunch of tourists in the casino, rather you pass a slew of local retirees that look like they are gambling the money they should be using for basic necessities -- very depressing. The smell of stale smoke just permeates anywhere near the casino, though it's the only place I've ever seen someone carrying an oxygenator and a cigarette at the same time (I just prayed the oxygenator was turned off). Pretty similar experience on my prior stay.

As noted above, it's a 15-20 minute ride to the strip, and there are only a small number of restaurants within a short walking distance. There are more that are like a mile away, which may not be "walking distance" for everyone in the Nevada heat. That said, the on-site restaurants are pretty good (Italian and the pub are the ones we remember, and I think we ate in the tapas place too) - the 24-hour diner was old and depressing both in décor and clientele.

Rooms were nice -- as are most JWs.

Remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas -- and also remember that Summerlin ain't Vegas!!!

If your vacation to Vegas is about visiting family/friends that live in the west areas of town, then yes. Pools won't be full of 20-somethings meat market, and plenty of residential parks in Summerlin to take the kids to. As hotels go, it's a nice place, and more of a "locals" place so yes, mostly retirees hanging around the casino especially on weekdays.

If you're looking for more of a "Las Vegas" vacation, then I wouldn't want to stay there because you'll be driving 20 min each way and won't get that Las Vegas feel and experience staying off the Strip.

I would recommend signing up in person, even if there was an online option for joining (there isn't), as this deal might be only for new members. If you already have an account and try to use this deal, they might tell you that you don't qualify.

There is a Rampart Rewards desk in the casino, where you can sign up, and they will probably give you the details on how to use the casino free play portion of the deal, which can be used on slot or video poker machines. There are signs all around the casino with arrows pointing the direction towards the desk. I would think it would be a good idea to bring documentation of the deal to show them what you are supposed to be given, when you sign up. They will print you a card which you put in a reader slot at the casino machines, and then enter your pin, to load the machine with the free play credits. The card is also used for tracking your casino play, in order to earns comps.

As far as those saying why would anyone want to stay away from the more popular areas, people have different preferences. If you want to actually sleep in your room without concert or club music at 1am weeknights, this would be a good choice. The downside is that it is pretty much on its own, with just one nearby casino, about 1/2 mile away. Very different than staying on the Strip or Downtown.

If the outdoor temps are reasonable, dining outdoors at the Hawthorn restaurant there (only a few tables available), with their reasonable pricing, is something I'd recommend.
