IMO, sheets are better if you have a pet, are in a very dry / static-y area, or if you always end up with lint on your clothes. The dryer sheet helps reduce those problems in the dryer. I personally do not put most of my clothes in the dryer to dry, so I use liquid softener on those loads (But I use dryer sheet for sheets, towels, and other items I dry in dryer.) I think dryer sheets usually end up being a better value, too (more uses per pkg).

I use both (mom did too). The fabric softener is to soften the clothes. I only use it when washing something that I want to be softer like blankets, towels, clothes etc. The fabric sheet decreases cling in the dryer as well as making the clothes smell nicer and help remove things like dog hair or lint like others have said. I'm particular about fabric softener, all is really great and usually on sale wherever.
