People have wisely moved away to Avis long ago - I didn't and it was hell.

The Exe office staff lied to me. When one lie and deny, the others do not want to do anything.
They do not weigh the longevity of the account. Brutal.
My issue lasted for 9months of ordeal. Even 7 on your side could not do anything.
Wise people moved away from them to Avis on the first sign of de-valuing points saying greedy. I didn't and paid the price.
I will find another company if Hertz is really that bad.
I only selected them because they were the best price at the time.
My experiences were I always got a car but their customer service was worse, the car was dirtier and/or higher miles than enterprise, they were also slower to give out the keys than enterprise/avis at the time. So mostly a "get what you pay for" deal. I got the car in the end so I didn't really care otherwise.

If you're alright with ending up having to pay $15k+ for your rental car out of pocket in an accident or theft or vandalism go ahead and skip the insurance. For my upcoming rental in portland, after insurance it was the same inflated price as the car rental agencies for an old cheap car.
