I got both a year and half ago. The 2DS is no joke and I would take it over the new 3DS XL, which would be more than double the price. It lacks 3D screen, two shoulder buttons, 2nd joystick nub (which is often unusable), and newer CPU, but plays 99.9% of the games well and without worry. This includes all DS and most 3DS games, NES and GBA virtual console. Only things it can't play are a few games like Xenoblade, Binding of Isaac, and SNES virtual console.

EDIT: 2DS vs new 3DS XL differences also include:
- mono speaker vs stereo speakers
- easy to access full size SD slot vs hard to access micro SD slot
- smaller, sharper screens vs larger blockier screens (effectively same resolution...new 3DS XL has double horizontal resolution on top screen for 3D)
- no NFC/Amiibo vs built in Amiibo reader
- sleep slide switch vs sleep by closing clamshell

But again, this 2DS is great to natively play back library of thousands of DS and 3DS games, virtual console, or hacks to play even more like GB/GBC/GBA and NES.

EDIT 2: If you're a Pokemon junkie, you can officially play all (or almost all) previous generations of Pokemon. GB/GBA games are in eShop, you can play DS/3DS games on cartridge and I think you can transfer all Pokemon out of those games officially with the PokeBank app in the eShop and transfer them to the new Pokemon Home app on Switch and mobile. I don't have all the details, but this would let you carryover all previous Pokemon into Home officially.

It is objectively sharper since, again, it's the same resolution and smaller, so higher DPI. Regarding TN vs IPS panels, I never got into that and I would assume unless you had both next to each other, you wouldn't notice, and you definitely wouldn't notice while playing a game for an extended period of time.

Coming back for another edit:
what the previous person was talking about is the "IPS" screen lottery on the new 3DS XL. IPS screens are more highly sought after, with some versions like the Zelda edition, more likely to have IPS screens. This 2DS all have the same screens (really 1 big screen with plastic covering up to divide it into 2). I don't think it's it big deal to try to get an IPS screen, and you're not guaranteed to get any IPS panels even if you get a new 3DS XL and doesn't really affect what or how you play, but the hardcore 3DS people swear by the IPS screens.

If you're on the fence, just buy. New in-box refurbs of this colorway for the 2DS are worth up to $200 on eBay currently. Value will take a small hit for a couple of weeks due to this new stock and then will rebound in about a month or two. Even used, as long as kept in good condition, these will appreciate in value.

I'm planning on buying four. One for a Christmas gift and hacking it for my niece, same for nephew, one for me to play around with since it's the only version of the 3DS I don't own, and another to warehouse for a couple of years and then sell to regain my initial investment, plus some.

Just gonna chime in for a second

After having repaired 3DS devices for a few years, I do not recommend the 2DS in terms of long-term ownership

The main problem is that 2DS parts are more expensive than the standard 3DS counterparts. A single 2DS screen can run you $30+ whereas the new 3DS xl screen is only $15. I would also like to add that the 2DS "screens" are actually one gigantic screen portioned to fit the device shell, so if one "side" breaks, the entire screen is broken.

Combined with lacking stereo, being very small for adults, no 3D, no amiibo reading, not having IPS, it's not worth it getting a 2DS.

The best models are the 3DS XL original and the new 3DS X no question.

Hmm.. How well does this pair up with emulation? Nothing to crazy. Mostly Nes, Snes, Gen, N64 and PS1

Not sure I can fully agree. The 2DS is built like a tank and can easily have a one piece case to make it more durable. Screen is inset, as well, making it safer to use. The clamshell design on any other 3DS also introduces more likely to break at the hinge, especially younger kids, and any case would be a two piece. And I didn't look it up, but I would expect the 3D specialty screen to be more expensive to replace than a single 2D screen (which was made as such to reduce manufacturing costs).

Also, this 2DS is available now at a low price. New 3DS XL would be more expensive and no guarantee about this IPS screen lottery and no charger in the box (added $10 cost). It can play 99.9% of the games, which is the most important thing, everything is a luxury surcharge.

Anecdotally, I have both (through Nintendo refurbished) and the shoulder buttons on the new 3DS XL seem flimsy that one stopped responding before I was able to wiggle it back into place, also 3DS XL would require some sort of comfort grip for extended use since it's so thin and small, while the 2DS has a larger wedge shape that's slightly more comfortable without an addon.

I have an 8 and 5 year old and the 8 year old knows about the Switch so I wonder if he'd play with a 2ds. Him and his brother basically smash everything so I dont want to get them a Switch just yet. A year or two of 2ds until they can learn to care for things is my plan, I just dont want them to kick it to the curb because its old.

My 8 year old has played a ton of Switch and 2DS this past year at home. Lots of quality games, especially if they're gamers and care about the big franchises like Mario, Zelda (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remakes and an original Link to the Past "sequel" called A Link Between Worlds are must plays), Pokemon to name the obvious ones. Younger ones might get a kick out of licensed games that you maybe don't want to spend too much on for the Switch. And it plays all original DS generation games, so lots of great games that you can't play on the Switch.

This is fine and all, but you can't buy a 3DS anymore for a decent price, it would cost up to 6x more than this for one in good shape. So this is an excellent alternative for a crazy cheap price, all current market prices considered.

Any value of this if I already have a switch?
Sure! It had the best library of last gen, imo. You can buy a 15 dollar micro SD card, hack it, and fill it with pretty much the best 3DS/DS/GBA games.

Considering the current market this is a deal. I don't need another 2ds "slate", but gives me hope some 3DS might show up.

Which mod are you using? I had an actual cartridge for the DS, but I don't think they make those anymore.
No cart needed... its custom firmware called luma3ds. Plenty of youtube vids on it..super simple. Use some homebrew software called FBI to load the CIA file... it's STILL an amazing device!

I grabbed the limited edition yellow & red Mario Maker 2DS edition for my son and he enjoys it.

I also snagged the black & turquoise 2DS XL w/ Mario Kart 7 when Wally was selling them for $99. That's still NIB.

Even with two, it's tempting to grab another, but for what, I don't know…

My son is curious to try the 3D functions, so hoping Nintendo finds some refurb 3DS XLs to post soon…
