If you're just getting into this hobby, be ready to spend a lot more on upgrade and fish.

If you're new to fish keeping, get something larger than 10 gal. 10 gal is more difficult to keep fish healthy. Even 20 gal long is a much better choice. 30 would be a great choice and make a nice display.

Also need gravel and tank decorations/plants but agree doesn't cost too much.

Hack - buy polyester fiber sheet for a few bucks and cut to the filter size so you don't have to buy the overpriced filter inserts replacements that last only a few weeks at a time.

It can get expensive but it doesn't take much money to start. This kit comes with a hang on filter and heater. All you need is the fish and fish food (and cycle the tank... But that's free)

Thanks for the idea. Any link to polyster fiber sheets?

Something like this. Should be good enough for a few years of filters. Filters made out of the same material.

Poly-Fil® Extra-Loft® Polyester Batting by Fairfield™, 72" x 90", Precut

This is a good deal. I bought a similar kit from Walmart for 35 but it did not include the heater and thermometer. I had an old heater sitting around that I used. The filter is also not that great that came with the Walmart kit. I am using it as a quarantine/hospital tank.
Stick with smaller fish if using this as a primary tank.

Wrong assumption.

I have this exact tank and have been doing this for years.

Your fish will get sick if you dont cycle the water properly, and change the water properly to prevent ammonia buildup. Also dont feed too much and dont have too many fish in the tank.

Has nothing to do with using this material for filter replacement.

Don't take my word for it, google fish tank filter hacks.

So just buy it, cut it and remove the existing filter and replace it with this one ? What about the media inside the filter ? I have a mainland side mount filter.

Good deal. I've owned aquariums all my life ranging from 175 gallons to 50. Getting my son in to it just to see if he will want to really get in to it. This would be a good starter and then move up if he likes caring for it.

I will say I haven't owned a aquarium for about 6-7 years now but what's some good live plants for smaller aquariums like this?

This is what i did.

There is a blue plastic slide in next to the original filter slide in. I cut a piece to wrap front and back of the blue plastic slide in and put it in front of the original filter. This way it keeps the original filter cleaner longer. The original filter has carbon rocks in it. In essence you have 2 layering of filters.

When changing, toss the the material you used to wrap the blue plastic slide and replace with another cutout. The original filter you can rinse it as it shouldn't be too dirty and use again.

If you really want to extend the life of your filters even more, buy a sponge cap for the inlet of your filter, which can be rinsed when cleaning your filter.

The real trick is not to have too many fish in the tank. Rule is 1 fish per gallon. More fish means more bi-load, which translates to more fish food - more fish waste - filter gets dirty quicker.

Make sure it says 100% polyester and you're fine

I thought the rule was 1" of fish per gallon. Larger fish also produce more waste than smaller ones.
