Those prefilters are the outside sleeves and main particle/carbon filter lasts about 6 month per manual. OEM filter costs ~$80 so ~$160 per yr. Filter cost is definitely on the expensive side compared to some other brands that last ~1 yr on $70-80 OEM filter.
Reading is fundamental. Amazon site was for reference, OMG.
Fyi, the filters are not HEPA but some proprietary kind.

I don't know what was happening to be honest. The few times I opened it to check where the smell was coming from I got a strong shock from the filter. (Stronger then static shock) Not sure what it was from but it happened to me at least 2x

I just returned this exact model at Costco. After a few days of use it started producing a strong smell. It's a well documented problem if you check reviews and YouTube videos. This one doesn't use a true hepa filter and uses ionization. I saw another blue air model in their return pile as well. I would avoid this brand until they acknowledge and address the issue. (If you read the reviews it seems like it's their filter manufacture process that's an issue. As older models that didn't have the smell started to smell after installing a new filter)
That's why I appreciate that this is with Costco's guarantee, which means if this stuff happens, I can just take it to the local branch and drop it there and get my money back immediately no questions asked...

I also had this same experience. Bought it last time on sale and returned to Costco. It started to produce this sour smell and it's definitely from the filter. I took the filter out and ran the fan by itself and no smell.. once the filter is back in sour smell is back. I like the unit as it moves a lot of air but pretty loud at level 3..level 2 is bearable...level 1 is quiet.. but had to return.

I just got a HP04 for $195 at Target on clearance. Is this a better air purifier for the money?

So do we care that these aren't actually H13 HEPA? Seems true HEPA LEVOIT units get good marks as well and are typically cheaper on Amazon (though not in this case).
One Levoit unit was reviewed on YouTube and it got very poor ratings for actual air quality. Can't remember which model.

You mean smelly filter? Do you personally have an experience replacing it through CS?

I contacted CS and it took them forever to get back to me. By the time they responded I already returned my unit back to Costco. The filter that came with the 121 is not sealed so it's exposed and probably absorbed everything hence the smell.

Here's Blueair response to my request for filter replacement...

Thank you for your patience in my response and apologies for the issue.

Many new products release a new smell upon opening and using right out of the box. This is also true for filter media. Filter fibers can absorb a smell from other materials during the packaging process. This smell and all components involved during our filter production are harmless and non-toxic. This newness smell should move through and out of the filter within 48 hours of use. Since you have run the air purifier for well over 48 hours and are still experiencing this issue, please respond to this email with the serial number directly off the filter and your shipping address. We would be happy to send you a replacement filter at no cost to help make this situation better.

Kind Regards,
Robin
Please be advised that due to the high volume in email requests from covid and the wildfire crisis, our response may take additional time. We appreciate your understanding.

Just got a Classic 605 via Amazon treasure truck deal but might have to go two of these instead. Worth a buy to compare. Thanks OP!
