Looks like if you don't have currently enabled Amazon Sidewalk devices, you won't have the option in your Alexa setting to turn it off(?)

So later on additional device become enabled, you need to turn off Amazon Sidewalk at that time??? Meaning if Amazon suddenly enable older gen Echo (or other device currently not in the list) to act as sidewalk, then at later time, the option to turn it off will be available and someone need to remind you to turn off sidewalk???

Or in the future you buy newer echo devices, then need to remind yourself to turn off sidewalk at that time....

OK. Find this.

I tried it but don't even see a toggle. It just shows a list of eligible devices.

I'm seeing the same thing. I'm wondering if our devices aren't a new enough model? Mine are a couple years old

Damn did no one actually read the info about this? The speed is literally capped at 80kbs which is literally nothing and has a cap of 500MB. This isn't letting someone to use your internet. This is to help people find their things. So if you lose your tablet or item with a tile on it. You can't use it to browse the internet. Also as for it being secure, they claim it is triple encrypted, so if you're going to give apple the benefit of the doubt with their version of this, you need to give it to Amazon. When I read the click bait titles I was originally like "oh hell no I'm turning it off" then I actually read the articles and this is a non issue. 80kbs you won't notice unless you have dial-up. And if you're worried about it using a total of 500MB of data a month, you probably shouldn't be on here wasting your bandwidth.

Please for the love of god people. Actually read beyond the god damn title of things

It is their internet, not yours. You got no authority to tell people if they should turn it on or not. I have 1000Mbs internet and i am still turning it off. Ans yes, i have multiple airtags.

I'm not telling them not to turn it off. Just that they should educate themselves instead of just going by clickbate titles.. not once did I tell anyone to not turn it off. So you're kind of proving my point about people not reading.

You can tell that all the people complaining haven't actually read anything about it.

Why are you talking about how fast your internet is? DSL could handle 80kbps.

Your super fast internet speed has literally nothing to do with it, unless you're still thinking they're allowing 500mbps download speed, instead of 500mb total usage per month.

Go read an article about it instead of relying on third-hand gossip.

Why does Amazon get to share my connection? They will probably charge OEMs to use it, but will I get a penny? Nope. Jeff's yatch that needs a baby yatch can get its very own baby yatch too!

Seriously, it should ONLY be on by default for people that buy a device that can benefit from it.

Bought a tile tracker ? Good, welcome to Amazon's sidewalk program. Opt-out? Okay, then your Tile tracker won't connect to someone else's Sidewalk network either.

Do you know what devices it works with?

Why would they even think this was reasonable. All the security risks that we would be exposed to via this service is crazy.

Quote from Nishiko :
Sidewalk is actually an amazing idea and service... Amazon has **every** incentive not to mess this up... if they lose people's trust then the whole thing goes kaboom. the detailed specifications they have published are very transparent and show that they have done their homework. because of this almost over-engineering, there is almost zero risk to your privacy, and the bandwidth it will use on your network is extremely extremely small for like 99% of users. even Amazon won't have visability into the datagrams.

There may be slight protocol problems discovered over time (or, more likely... implementation problems)... but if so you can bet Amazon will be all over that and fix it ASAP.

I have no problem with people making their own decision regarding this, but I just get so tired of the media clickbait type of content, scaring people unnecessarily to get it turned off ASAP (and I'm not saying that is what's being done here at all with this PSA... thank you OP!)

This overlay network called Sidewalk that Amazon has created will allow incredible new use cases, that will make all of our lives more convenient & enable completely new innovations from third-party companies because now these applications of the tech are practical at scale and much much lower cost than the mobile networks offer

The one criticism I can see is that Amazon is enabling it by default, but can you imagine if it was opt-in... the "tyranny of the default" rules... it would take years before the network had any scale... this way it goes to scale overnight virtually, with what is likely approaching zero effect on anyone's network or privacy or security.

I hope most of you will get better educated on this and not jump the gun in turning it off before you can make a more rationally, better-informed decision. If after that you still want it off, that's fair and fine.

I was thinking the same thing. If folks took the time to actually read about it instead of giving into the headline, they would probably leave it alone.

Thanks, OP! This was on my radar but I forgot to do anything about it. Great reminder and now taken care of. Kudos!
