Looks like if you don't have currently enabled Amazon Sidewalk devices, you won't have the option in your Alexa setting to turn it off(?)

So later on additional device become enabled, you need to turn off Amazon Sidewalk at that time??? Meaning if Amazon suddenly enable older gen Echo (or other device currently not in the list) to act as sidewalk, then at later time, the option to turn it off will be available and someone need to remind you to turn off sidewalk???

Or in the future you buy newer echo devices, then need to remind yourself to turn off sidewalk at that time....

Amazon's big mistake was giving people the option to disable it - it gives thirsty biased journalists something to write about ("it must be nefarious if they GIVE YOU THE OPTION TO DISABLE IT!") and it allows technological laypeople the opportunity to feel like they are one stepahead of everyone else in acting on advice from CNET articles written by boomers for boomers.

Every criticism I've seen is based on FUD that can be easily dispelled by looking at the white paper.
Actually the bigger problem is Amazon didn't even think about how to introduce this. If they have done any survey, they probably understand they will need to come up with a "must have" benefit that most people want before they introduce something like that.

For Apple, they have this "Find My" network (allow stranger's iphone/ipad/Mac, etc to communicate with Apple server) and make it so that if you don't turn it on, you won't be able to find your iphone/ipad/Mac if you lose it or someone stole it, etc.

Samsung also has similar thing for SmartTag and 'Find My Mobile' service

Samsung and Apple already "sharing" your cellphone data to strangers' device and no one complain because of the benefit. So what does Amazon device has? Why would I want to turn that on for Echo (may be the only Amazon sidewalk enabled device most people have) which usually just stationary at home and don't need to find them?

You missed the part where it's Amazon and they don't give a frack about your privacy. In fact. All their ring devices work alongside local police. They can tap in and see anyone's ring camera whenever they want.

Not true. Police can request you share video if there was a possible crime committed, but they can't access it without your consent.

* Is this for the account or devices? US only accounts/ devices?

* What if we have both in US + outside US?

* Can we still opt out - now - given the date passed?

* How would this apply to devices purchased?

PS: How can this be automatic and time bound without our consent.

No. You need your own WiFi. Sidewalk is only a backup network for Ring.
