Depends on your use case. A desktop consumes more electricity, larger, noisier, but is more powerful for desktop applications. Pi's are opposite plus has GPIO header for projects and expansion HATS.

The Aluminum edition case appears to be a remarked FLIRC case, which was the original Pi passive cooled case, but IMHO the newer Argon Neo, iUniker, and Geekworm passive cases are superior. They tend to have contact sinks for chips other than the cpu on the Pi that produce heat, and gaps for GPIO and camera ribbons. Search "pi 4 passive aluminum case" on Amazon for examples.

It's overkill for the pi4, but pihole [pi-hole.net] is amazing. It's a network wide spam filter. No more ads on mobile

I'm pretty sure that's what they were trying to say with the "overkill" part, though to be fair they didn't word it well.

What if I want to run a torrent client and a backup software in the background? 4GB still enough?

I assume Pi 4 can't really do Plex transcoding?
There is a way to torrent straight to the pi. I use a seedbox so that's not anything I do but there is a way though I think you'd need to install the regular OS and then use add-ons for the media server and torrents client.

Honestly if I get around to it I may check out a full setup past libreelec to see if I can have it access ftp directly. I can access the server via ftp and ssh so it's easy to move files over but would be easier if they went straight to the pi from my seedbox.

I think 4GB will be enough. I use mine to stream 1080p mkv files, sometimes to multiple devices simultaneously and it has no problem. Whenever I check the usage I'm never more than 4gb of ram used. I got 8gb for potential future proofing

I have a couple of pi 3b's. Both run piOS lite. One has open vault media server (for my media shares) and docker containers for pihole and transmission. On the other one I'm running Jellyfin media server and piVPN. Great little machines if you are into tinkering. My main reason for using a pi is low power consumption because they run 24/7

Also cost and size. I have mine on a shelf hidden behind one of my surround sound speakers.

Again there is no desktop you can buy anywhere close to these. You could maybe get an off lease celery desktop for 200 bucks but this would be better than that in every way.

I love my Pi's, but you have to use them for the right reason.

If you want to create a media streamer, a retro game machine, or a project that needs GPIO, the Pi is the obvious choice.

But where I live, there is a local college that sells their old PCs for $100-200. Those thinking about running torrents, and serving media to themselves, while wanting the PC to do other things really should consider a USED PC. But maybe those aren't available near you.

Again, I have at least 6 Raspberry Pis and I love them. But none of them could replace my home server.

What's a good seedbox provider these days?

4gb works great for running torrent client (I use deluge and keep the pi headless and initiate the download through my laptop - honestly love how it works and don't need to leave my laptop running 24/7). I don't run backup software.

I have mine setup as a very light-use plex server as well. It's transcoded a few movies for me without issue, but a) we're not talking 4K remuxes and b) it mainly direct plays so don't have a ton of transcoding done.

You can get a used laptop for $100 that has a screen too, more input ports, output, cameras, and is probably 1000x faster than Raspberry Pi 4 and runs both Windows and Linux.

The point of Raspberry was to be the "cheap" cool, pocket computer no one understands how it can be sold for $24.99. But at these prices, it misses the mark.

I've seen several videos of Pi 4 stuttering on YouTube or Kodi steaming 4K, I dont remember which one. It was very disappointing.

Building a nas drive since Google photos is going to get pricey is the 8gb overkill. Also will use to store media to stream to my shieldtv with kodi.

You're missing the mark here. There are so many other purposes for these things these days. I just made a sick openwrt router out of one that blows any router you can buy commercially out of the water. If you buy these things for purposes based applications they are right on the money. I have 3 older ones clustered together as a neat compiler. These are all way more capable for streaming than your average roku or fire stick. Now I agree that some of these allocations are overkill but the company has been very good at adding options rather than limiting the consumer to just 1 version you have the option of a stripped down version all the way up to the newest 4 with 8gb of ram. Buy with a plan and purpose and you won't go wrong!! I have the newest version as a desktop replacement in my workshop running Linux like a champ and it's great as a desktop replacement for my simple work shop needs like web browsing, watching streams and running my CNC machine.

I set up pihole and it's been fantastic. Took some work to whitelist things but overall a stellar little web blocker.

How does pihole intercept DNS queries by e.g. your phone if those queries are done over DoH (DNS over https)? That part I don't quite understand as everything seems to move to DoH lately.
