That's a somewhat interesting question depending on what you value.

Both of these sockets are end of life so there is no upgrade path other than existing CPUs.
The 5800X can be upgraded to a 5950X in the future. However, I don't see this as a logical or likely scenario for most people. Pure CPU performance, the 10850K is the better buy. It lacks PCI-E 4.0 support so if you have an NVME SSD that can take advantage of it, you lose this benefit. It does have an iGPU though which can be quite useful. Motherboard costs to features have mostly reached parity between the two as well. The difference in CPU power draw will mean that you are spending a few extra dollars a year to run the 10850K but it would likely take at least 10 years to reach that $70 in savings. Honestly, unless you just want to build an AMD system, I'd say go for the 10850K, depending on the deals you find on the motherboard, of course. Total platform cost for your specific use is more important than individual CPU cost when determining value.
Whew this is a pretty decent deal 299 before a 20 $ off with mobo. If your lucky enough to be by microcenter this is a steal
10850k hands down is the better price to performance. Its cheaper by $70, slightly loses in ST, and slightly wins in MT over 5800x. But you also get an IGP out of the 10850k, which the 5800x doesnt have.

For the price, what's the better deal? Performance vs cost?

I don't think you'll get 23% more performance on the 5800x, I'd vote on the 10850k being the better deal. I personally went with the 10850k since it was cheaper and I've been on Intel for the past several builds. Been wanting to switch but I've had a very good track record with Intel that I decided to stick around (especially with their price drop)

I wanted the 5600x but it was OOS and way too damn expensive. Scalpers ruined it

BTW with these processors you gotta budget another 50-100 dollars for a decent cooling solution, might be worth it to just save that $70 and use it on a premium AIO cooler

Oh, good luck trying to get a GPU! MC gets 6-10 a day and they are gone in seconds. Oh and those 6-10 could be 1660 or 3080, the range is all over the place.

I'd go with the $299 CPU 5800X vs 10850K I tend to lean AMD since 3900X but just paid $280 for a 9900K. Long drive to MC but would consider taking the trip if I didnt already have the 9900K. Price per thread is an easy way to compare. If a 5700X existed how much would it be? 5800X is pretty much what a 5700XT would be.

The 11600k vs. this....is it worth that with the lack of pic-e 4.0? The 11600k is a little cheaper and faster in single and dual core. Thoughts?

Faster than the 8-core 11900k for half the price.
