Then you are actually missing out on the best picture quality and lossless sound experience.

If only iTunes (and the other streaming providers) would actually stream movies at the same (or better) bit rate as physical media. But they don't. So I keep buying physical media. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that this set comes with a digital code included. But when I want the best presentation I can obtain for a particular movie, physical media is almost always it.

The studio is likely looking to hit a specific sale number on the previously released sets before announcing it and setting a date. Would not surprise me to see it pushed back to the Fall.

Same here. You always know what you're getting with physical media. Some Blu-Ray and 4K titles have been underwheming, but most of the time your presentation is as good possible (at the time). Not sure if streaming will ever as good as a disc.

i doubt it will ever be. ISP bandwidth constraints will make sure it doesnt.

What is new in the new set? Is it remastered even more?
According to the Verge: [nerdist.com] " That's not all, though. In addition to the two 4K UHD trilogy boxsets — which will include both the theatrical and extended versions of all six films — there's also an Ultimate Collectors Edition with new bonus content and remastered LotR Blu-ray discs that's due to arrive in summer 2021. So, if you're desperate you can grab the 4K UHD editions of the films now, or you can wait until next year for the most complete and advanced versions.

Reading the comments feel sad for those bought Bluray and think this is the end. Will check back when 8K remaster is a thing.
The perceived difference between 4k and 8k is so insignificant that there is absolutely no point in spending the money on the 8k ever

I don't think the "Ultimate Collector's Edition" will contain different versions of the LOTR and Hobbit movies themselves - you'll get all six theatrical and all six extended editions, in the 4K remastered form that came out in late 2020. But there will also be some new special features/making-ofs etc., and probably cool packaging of some kind.

If you're like me and have no interest in owning the Hobbit movies, and got your fill of LOTR making-ofs in the DVD days, then there's no reason not to buy this LOTR set.

You assume we/he has a stereo which can take advantage of the lossless audio. He may have tv speakers.
Good point, and is logical considering he has apparently also shunned disk players, though doesn't explain why he felt compelled to post in a thread about films on disk.

Wishful thinking on my part that release of new set may potentially have downward price implications for this set. I am only interested in LOTR 4K set

"More bonus content "? These movies are already a week long. I've read the books twice and watched the movies several times. Seen most of the bonus material and enjoyed the extended versions of the movies. What else can be added that will be interesting? Will there be footage of the actors commuting to the set or a few shots of the craft services table? Editing is usually done for pacing and time limitations. It's also done to remove the less than good material from the movie. This is a good price. The new ultimate ultra mega super god mode supreme best ever edition is not a big deal unless it is drastically improving (to 8k) the already outstanding video of this deal. Without top of the line audio and video equipment, most of us wouldn't be able to enjoy the difference anyway. For the collectors, wait for the ultimate ultra super...edition. Those that just love the story and enjoy the movies on a non fanatical I have a life level, this is a good deal. When the next version is released, it will be pricey. Until rumors of yet an even more complete 10x ultra ultra mostest bestest set ever is to be released. How many are actually going to waste time watching every second of the thousand hours bonus set? There are so many other great movies and series to enjoy. Grab this set, watch the movies and bits that interest you and move on with your life.

8k? They already have 16 and 32k respectively. Reality is many homes are still without 4k capability

The HD are all on D2D. Is this a HD up conversion or a straight up reissue in 4K?

I'll wait until the overhyped Middle Earth Edition is released, and then get THIS for $49.99.

What "new footage" can that possibly include? Viggo kissing and head-butting everyone? It's all been seen on YouTube anyway.

That's why I bought this on iTunes awhile back and just keep getting it upgraded with every new version. I'm shocked so many people still have a disc player. Haven't had one in years…
Then a) you don't really own it, and b.) you aren't getting anywhere near the quality a disc set brings you audio and visual.

I really would like to own a 4K version like this but there are so many reviews about discs skipping. Anyone here own this set already? Just wondering if the discs might disagree with some 4K players and not others.

Well I don't believe they said "new footage", it was "new bonus content".
They didn't even say(promise) "new" 4K transfer, it most likely will be the same as this.

As someone pointed out what more "bonus content" could they add and good will it be.

I already have bonus content on the BD version, didn't feel the need to have it here.

When I finally realized object based soundtracks were the real deal and decided to upgrade.
This movie(s) was at the very top of my list of anticipation!

Thank God PJ did not disappoint, this is a fantastic reference transfer!
That is saying a lot since the BD version was also.
