I've had a correlle set for 15 years without a chip. What are you doing to these plates? Did their quality drop since then?
Yes. If you do some research the Correlle sold in US is no longer the same manufacturing technique they used to do which allows it to stand up to breakage. Canada correlle still uses the more expensive manufacturing process
Love Corelle and got the pasta bowl/plates yesterday from the Macy's deal here.
I have square plates from many years ago- the are durable and large- just wish they didn't come with these ugly prints (mine are just with black stripes but over time they've faded and don't look as dark, which is great by me-I really just want all white anyway).
I also have some round plates from previous deals (probably a couple of years old)- also hold up great, no idea what the manufacturing difference is, but they're still good. In all the years (probably around 10) only 1 plate has broken and none chipped.
The mugs are not made from the lightweight stuff though and do break when dropped.

People saying you aren't saving on this deal, check the price for the square patterns elsewhere, this is a great deal.
28 is the round set. Square set is much more expensive.
Some of the above comments show they have no clue.
Old Sesame Street: One of these shapes is not like the other.
