About the USA Rail Pass:
  • The USA Rail Pass allows you to take a multi-segment journey on Amtrak for one low, fixed price. After you purchase your pass, you will be able to start booking each segment of your trip directly from your purchase confirmation, by going to 'Modify Trip' on Amtrak.com, or by looking up your reservation on the Amtrak mobile app.
  • A travel segment occurs any time you board and disembark a train (or other scheduled services). If your trip involves making one connection, you will use two segments of your USA Rail Pass.

You have to use all 10 rides within 30 days from your first ride. But the first ride has to be made within 120 days of the pass purchase.

How do you work on the train? The amtrak wifi is garbage based on my experience

Not just the distance between cities but the layout. In most cities you're gonna need to rent a car over and over to get around within town, and if you're doing that - just rent the car and drive the distance.

FWIW a 10-day Eurail pass is $777, yikes, makes this seem like a bargain despite all the hassles.

Not that useful for commuters - restricted to two round trips between city pairs and intermediates on a route. So at best, get 4 segments of commuting at $75 each.

I've wanted to go on vacation (solo) but the increase in car rental prices have made it problematic. Is this a good alternative for someone who wants to plan out a trip through the US, around cities/areas that have public transportation and doesn't need a car?

And you'd still need to find a place to sleep for each of the destinations, right? Any thoughts from those who've done this before? I've never been on vacation (the fam doesn't approve of young me driving alone) and so hoping someone who's a veteran can speak up!

Been on two Amtrak multi day trips on our West coast and that's enough. It's a easy way to travel, but you only get a passing peek at things of interest. I MUCH prefer a car road trip with a tent option for those out of the way places. I suggest one visit our remote areas of N California, up into Oregon's N/E, Nevada, too see things, meet people one never gets to do by rail.

Rent a van, mini van, take a tent when you want to stay in a remote place of interest, small town motels are cheap, and you will see a whole lot more of the US vs a rail trip.

one of the restrictions is no more than 2 round trips between the same cities. so that won't work.

I was looking at a trip to New Orleans and it counted 3 segments so 6 total if I went round trip.

Ultimately 1 way to New Orleans is currently $180 which means this is effectively half off, at least for that trip. It's also competitive in price vs flight and the train only takes twice as long (30 hours vs 15) given flights have long layovers from here thst are cheap

If I'm getting on and off trains 10 times in 30 days it's because I've dropped off the grid to become a traveling hobo riding the freight trains.

One of my favorite memories as a kid was riding in a train to see a few places across the US. Even if you don't go all over the whole country, a trip to the grand canyon, glacier, Oregon/Redwood forests, will leave a life long imprint on your kids life. I was on several road trips, international vacations, and of all of them, the train trip was a huge highlight of my travels.

A good deal but unfortunately until Amtrak can restore and expand service in terms of routes, stops, frequency and on-board amenities like meals, which is going to take months to years, this will only make sense for people well-served by its current offerings. Beyond the occasional day trip or two several hundred miles away, rail travel in the US, as opposed to abroad where there's often 10x as many routes and miles/kilometers covered, is enjoyable only if there's sit-down hot meal service for all three meals, and ideally in a private room where meals are included, you either have your own bathroom or have to share it with far fewer (and generally better-behaved) people, can shower, and of course sleep much, much better. So I'll wait till next summer or beyond.

Who says you have to use big city stations? There are plenty of stops in small towns and touristy places like Glacier NP MT, Grand Junction CO, New River Gorge WV, etc. You get off, rent a car, sightsee for a few days and stay in local motels, then get back on the train till the next destination. The idea is to rest during those long stretches between destinations and not have to drive and deal with restless kids, so you arrive rested and ready to enjoy them. You or at least the kids might also enjoy the train since there's room to stretch out, walk around, get a hot meal, etc. If you can splurge and get a room all the more fun. They even have a special family bedroom in every car. And you can shower!
