I went to the Maldives and im not a relax at the beach type of traveler. If you are into snorkeling, Maldives has some of the best snorkeling in the world. We spent a week there and ended up snorkeling all around the island we were on. It was like a fish soup, I've never seen this much sea life anywhere I have been. In addition to schools of fish and sometimes balls of fish, we also saw baby sharks and sea turtles. That said, if you dont need the 5 star resort, you can get a trip to the maldives at a much cheaper price. Travelzoo has had deals in the past for more like $100 to $400 a night at other resorts. It wasn't the fairmont, but I was pretty happy with my stay at Reethi Faru.
We got the TravelZoo deal to Reethi Faru about a year ago and havent booked yet. How was it?!?!?

It was amazing! We loved it and we both agreed it was our favorite vacation. The sand is so soft and the water is so warm, it was paradise! The only negative was that I think we got tired of the buffet after 9 nights. Even though the food was different every day, as the buffet has theme nights, in hindsight we should probably have tried some of the a la carte restaurants. You get a $20 daily credit at those restaurants but we were too cheap and stuck to the buffet because it was included lol.

If you're looking for a "deal" on the Maldives and whatever package you're considering doesn't include the food and liquor, then you'd better keep looking. If you think $1000/day (discounted) for just the room is high, the Maldives definitely isn't the kind of place that you'd want to pay for your meals and drinks out of pocket especially since you really don't have a lot of alternatives there if you disagree with the resort's pricing on food and beverages.
Yeah, we're talking $125 steaks, $45 hamburgers, $25 peanuts and $100 room service surcharges.

Don't like it? Go somewhere else to eat. Oh wait, you can't because you're literally in the middle of nowhere. It's very much a captive audience situation. This is a lovely vacation you will never forget, but it's gonna be $12-$15,000 when all is said and done and that's if you're being money-minded.

I have been to the Malvides. First $1,000 a night is not a slickdeal, not even maldives. Slick was when the St Regis maldives opened and they price mistaked their suites at $200. That was slick. 2nd. You are gonna spend A LOT of money on food, beverages, activities and airfare. You need to fly to either: UAE, India, Hong Kong in order to get another flight to maldives. Then once you get to Male you need to catch another plane to the resort ($600 minimun per person). Then the food will set you around $300-$500 a day for 2 people.

Since you are paying so much for the accommodations would you just hang out at the villa for five days to get your money's worth?

Correct, you need to budget another $500-$1000 all in to cover meals, drinks and activities, remember your in the middle of no where, its rare you can go to other islands as they are other private resorts and

These are not budget resorts.

I came back from Bora Bora ( somewhat similar) and couples for 5 days were spending anywhere from $10K-15K not including flights.

If your just hanging out in a Villa for 5 days you will get bored really quick.

Just looking sea plane transfer is about $600 pp

All in including airfare your in very close to $10K ... Slick deal for your average person? I think not.

Depends on the person but the short answer is no, you will be bored within 2 days and regret spending at that money. Budget wise all in your about $10K for 2 people, including activities, meals and all flights.
