Typically the metallic smell is bacteria/ mold in the sponge because you don't rinse it out completely, ring it out completely of water and let it dry. Also they need to be boiled or microwaved in water from time to time to kill the mold that grows within them. Hence why professional kitchens don't use them and use rags because they change they more often (every day as opposed to every week or more that typically people keep sponges because they are expensive)

Used any yet? So many reviews that it's intentionally thinner just so commercial kitchen employees can't "accidentally use too much". Also a ton of reviews on how badly it was shipped.
