What does everyone in the modern world need to know?

Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful?

Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

I can't speak to the anti-science stuff but some of the political things he's said are really weird. Like he stated something like "Women joined the workforce and now the workplace has completely deteriorated for the last 40 years" and that "Women shouldn't be allowed to wear makeup in the workplace"
thats pretty strong... like to read up on the context of those statements sometime though.

I watched the full video and the context didn't really make the statements any better. It's on YouTube. It's in an interview conducted by an Asian man. Not sure what program it was though but you can certainly find it with a search

I read 2-3 books/mo and love self dev, but this is one of the few books I couldn't get into. I ended up returning it on audible.

Either the mods have been heavily active here, or people have been far more respectful than I was expecting for a JBP thread.

For anyone on the fence about the guy or his ideas, go to YouTube first. He has hours and hours and hours of content freely available there, going back about a decade. Watch a lecture or interview to get a feel for his perspective.

People tend to grossly over-extrapolate his simple matter-of-fact statements. A more fair interpretation would be he, as a psychologist, was commenting on the effects of women in the workplace and the changes it has had over the past 40 years.

This book is basically some tips for getting your own life in order. For $3 and considering its popularity, it's worth a read if you like self-improvement books. The topics of this book are independent of any surrounding political dialogue.

Jp: *disregards the existence of power structures and is casually dismissive of everyone whose lived experiences don't exactly mirror his own, and then claims it's all just "science"*

Fans: "haters need to chill and worry about themselves!"

There. Saved you $2.99

TLDR
1. "Stand up straight with your shoulders back."
2. "Treat yourself like you are someone you are responsible for helping."
3. "Make friends with people who want the best for you."
4. "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today."
5. "Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them."
6. "Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world."
7. "Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)."
8. "Tell the truth — or, at least, don't lie."
9. "Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't."
10. "Be precise in your speech."
11. "Do not bother children when they are skate-boarding."
12. "Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street."

I watched part of a series by another cognitive psychologist -- it was, unfortunately, a rather long-winded series of videos -- and one of her summaries of the book was essentially "it's not really bad advice, and if he had stuck to the 12 rules, it'd be a pretty good book. It's the science and claims he makes throughout that are sometimes questionable."

Quote from ZiLch :
Well, not weird when like 40% of the population believes that s*** as you can see here. It's a scary world out there. So much hate and bigotry, and Peterson's a part of that. Look at his supporters here, it's like a cult.

Honestly interested in examples of Peterson's hate and bigotry. He has come across as genuine even though I don't agree with him on everything I've read. Is your comment hyperbole? He's a bigot and those who've found value in his work are cultist?

Bought it last time for $2.99. Started the first few chapters, didn't like it, and deleted it. His writing is especially flowery, and his views on gender are messed up.
