If you buy from the Nintendo eShop, the game (or DLC) is automatically added to your virtual library. If you want to purchase the game "digitally" from a third-party non-Nintendo retailer like Amazon or Walmart, the way this is handled through digital redemption codes. You buy the item through the 3rd party and get a code, then enter that code in your Nintendo account, so that Nintendo knows you have purchased the rights to download and play that game.

Buying it from Nintendo directly, the amount of "Gold Coins" (points) you are rewarded is based on the dollar amount (in this case, 13.99 which somehow equates to 70 gold coins). When buying it from a third party like Amazon or Walmart, Nintendo doesn't know what dollar amount you paid, so it awards you "Gold Coins" based on the MSRP of that game. I think.

Either works. Dlc comes as a additional update from the eShop that is saved on your system

Bought the game and want to buy the DLC, but don't actually have a Switch yet. Is there a way I can pre-apply this to my account somehow?

I do have a Nintendo account on the eShop on which I've bought 3DS games before. Can I apply it towards that account without physically signing into a Switch first?

EDIT: If the digital code is good forever, then I guess I can wait, but I've bought DLC before (or bought games that included a DLC voucher) that had an expiration date for redeeming them--that's my only concern as far as pre-applying it.

Is this game worth it? My daughter and I enjoy original game. She already found out 118 shrines and want to finish it. Wonder if this a good addition to original game?

A lot of the additional content is quite challenging. Basically adds a few much harder quests/modes. If you think you'd be up for that then yes definitely get it.

I really wanted to like Breath of the Wild but the Achilles heel of the game are the weapons constantly breaking and it completely ruined it for me.

Progress further into the game and eventually there is somewhat of a remedy for this. Look it up for more info.

$.99 cheaper than getting it direct from the eshop. But if you claim a code from amazon or walmart, you usually get the gold coins equivalent to the full $20 price. So this is an ever so slightly better deal than the eshop deal.

correct, I redeemed it from amazon yesterday and got 100 reward points (equal to a dollar) which is higher than the 70 reward points listed on the eshop.
