My home is about 1300... I have a nice carrier hvac system that never cooled down the master bedroom or the add on 20 by 20 den.. I live in Florida..
I bought the 12k for the master bedroom and was so extremely impressed with how freezing ice cold it would chill the room in a matter of minutes..
It chilled it so nicely that I could tell the whole back of the house was colder when I had it on..
So I went ahead and bought the 24k for the den... Same results.. It not only blows ice cold it cooled the entire den down in just a few minutes..
I quickly realized that just running the 12k in the bedroom and the 24k in the den completely eliminated my need to ever turn on my HVAC again..
It cools the entire house down in minutes on a very hot day.. The HVAC system would run all day to barely maintain the chill in the house on a 90 degree day..
These 2 units are miracle for me.. They run at half the power and only a fraction of the time.. I predict these things will put hvac ducted systems out of business in the near future..
I was able to install both of them myself .. Purchased romex, breaker , and cut off box from amazon , ran the wires to the panel.. I had never done it before but after a few youtube videos and my desire to save a few hundred dollars the install was flawless.. I also purchased a 3 inch hole saw for my cinder block walls..
all that being said.. I dont think you will need the dual zone units if you do what i did.. place a 12k on one end of the house and a 24k on the other you will be amazed.. - oh and this is a very good deal.. i paid 1650 for my 24k from ingrams air and water.

Never even heard of that brand. Mr Cool has been making these mini spit systems for quite a while. And I'm also seeing 17 seer on HD's site [homedepot.com] as well. And like the other guy was saying above, it probably isn't a true DIY type system either. Looks like it has the flare ends on the line sets already (which is good for a DIYer because you need a special tool for that plus it's something easy to screw up if you don't know exactly what you're doing), but are they sealed from the factory like the mr cool ones where the line sets are punctured when you attach them? If not, it really should be evacuated/checked for leaks before starting up. Now this can be done with a gauge set and a vacuum pump but that's going to add to the cost a bit. Planning on having somebody come and do it... well you're already over the price of the mr cool system at that point and the discussion is over.

I usually get a bunch of years out of window units (have to handle them carefully and clean them well with bleach or whatever to get the mildew out of them at the end of the summer before you put them away). I'll tell you what I've had fail a in them a few times now, the motor bearings. I'm not going to lie and say it's super easy to replace them but if you have a little patients and a couple hours of time then they can be replaced. They just take small sealed bearings just like the ones found in skateboard or rollerblade wheels. First time I needed some I got them locally at a ACE or something and they were kind of expensive and the following time I ordered them from Amazon [amazon.com]. Not saying that they're all the same size but so far I replaced the ones in an LG and a couple of GE window units. Believe the blower motor was frigidaire in them if I'm not mistaken. Wonder how many good window units get tossed into dumpsters every year because two one dollar bearings go bad LOL.

You can buy something similar for under $1000.

A mechanical contractor friend of mine told me about this company. It's a typical Chinese made mini-split heat pump unit. He had installed quite of few of these units for his clients.

You absolutely can but the warranty is typically only good if the unit is professionally installed. These units also require the line set that carries the refrigerant to/from the compressor to be at vacuum so that the oxygen does not break down the refrigerant and destroy the compressor. Most DIYers do not have the tools or vacuum pump to do this so good chance you will get a year or two at most before the compressor goes. The Mr. Cool DIY does not have this warranty limitation and/or concern as the lineset has also been vacuumed and compressor overcharged to compensate for the refrigerant filling the lines.

The HVAC unit in both my rental units are in disrepair, they are over 15 years old. One unit is 1300sqft its a 3bed 2ba another unit is also 1300sqft it's also a 3bed 2ba with a basement around 1000 sqft (probably less may be 800-900 with 2 beds 1 ba).
Would it be sufficient to go with 24K BTU in my first unit (1300sqft its a 3bed 2ba)
and perhaps 36k BTU in the unit with basement.

Is it a good idea to replace my traditional centralized ac with this Mini Split AC? or am I better off replacing my old hvac units with new here in New York City , given its gets really cold in winters and I also have a gas furnace to support my centralized ac for heating.

id say yes. its much cheaper. you wont get as much "even" cooling as w a central unit, but I'd say you could get much of the unit cooled

edit: your central air' furnace still works?

Yes, furnace seems to be in good shape.

Thanks

I am thinking of getting rid of furnace and traditional ac and install the u-shape window ac. It's cheaper across the board.

We have AC, but our upstairs area gets pretty warm. I keep debating weather to get a unit like this for some extra cooling in the troubled area, or to go with something like a whole house fan. I love the idea of blowing all the hot air out of the attic and letting nice cool evening air in through the windows. I'm just not sure if that would make enough of a difference in the afternoon when the sun is beating down. I wish I would have pulled the trigger on the last unit that was the 9,000 BTU for $600.

I have the same issue with warmer upstairs. Master bedroom is upstairs and our mini split is amazing. Easily one of the best home improvement decisions I've made. Got a scratch and dent MRCOOL Advantage 18k unit for $650, did all the install myself besides vacuum and charge which was $250 froom HVAC contractor. Power company gave $600 rebate so total cost was about $300. We leave it at 68 all night and leave the central AC off. I sleep like a baby

Mice ate all the wires in our current Mini-Split, and parts are impossible to find for some reason (AllStyles brand). Local AC/Heating guys will only install equipment purchased from them, about twice this price all in. Since I already have Electricity routed and holes in the wall, would this be a fairly easy DIY install?
that's because they get them at even more discount without tax Wink they make $ on selling you the unit and on top of that the labor. stay away from those scum scammers.

3 Ton 13 SEER central AC cost about the same [hvacdirect.com] as this one. If you lines are good you actually end up with less labor work.

Awesome... exactly what I meant.
Much cleaner and nicer. My house is on a main road I just didn't want a dangly thing while I am trying to make a nice curb appeal look. Thank YOU!

Dont get a 9 to cool your house ... it wont work... I have a 9 and it use to cover the main floor but we raised the ceilings by 2.5 ft and took 2 doors off so we have 2 more open rooms for remodel and I can tell the 9 is struggling. roughly 1100sq ft.

we are going with a 12 or 15k not sure yet.
they also have an option you may want but we don't need. They have an outdoor main unit but comes with 2 units for inside so put one upstairs and one down and mount on same side of the house and you can cool both floors with a push of a button, alexa , voice or whatever these things can be controlled by now days

As long as electricity is as cheap as it is in America, these won't catch on. My brother's house is in FL, too. 3000sf under air, set to 72 all day every day (even in winter!). Don't think his electric bill is ever more than $100.

I have a small 2bed apt in the Caribbean. We have 2 mini splits in bedroom only, that run some nights during summers, fans otherwise. Our bills are minimum $150. Splits are the only way we can have AC affordably.

Typically, you are better off getting multiple smaller BTU units for different rooms (or zones), versus trying to cool the entire place all the time. Most have timers, so you can set it to start cooling say 30 minutes before you typically would come home in the evenings, and turned off throughout the day otherwise.

very true... and you also helped me to remember another very good point about these things..
Here in Fl (especially my area by the coast) we loose electricity real quick during a storm or hurricane because of how old the trees are around here and our lines are above ground..
These splits work great on my generator where as before with just the central system the generator was not practical to run .
