I went back and forth between this and the BenQ TK700STi for $1700+tax and the Optoma UHD38 for $1400+tax about 100 times. Finally landed on the 3800 and pulled the trigger just now for $1259! When in doubt and faced with multiple similar options, I tend to go with the cheapest one as I did here. Best of luck all!

Man.. i have been in the same boat for last one month and finally upgraded my Epson 2150 with 3800. Delivered today and images is but brighter and sharper. Input lag seems to better too. Loving it so far.

Can you explain why you chose this over the 4010 or 4040 models?

https://epson.com/For-Home/Projec...1H715020MB

This one is refurb around $999 usually on epson website

Also the 4010 I think is around $1300-1400 refurb as well on walmart website.

Those have much better contrast, and much quieter, but just worse gaming and slightly less lighting. Unless someone has to game on their projector I can't see why someone would chose this over the others...

Probably for HDR, gaming and brighter image. Looking at his choices, he is looking for mainly gaming. I have been in the same boat. I actually almost bought used (170 hours) 4010 for 850.

So the 3800 is better for HDR than those others?

Yes, 3800 has newest HDR, however if you are purely into home theater and don't care about hdr and gaming, go with 4010. It has better lense and motorized lense adjustment stuff

Am I missing something obvious? Isn't good HDR mean its better for home theater? Like its got good contrast and brightness needed for HDR?

Got my tracking on Thursday but still says label was created. They have no idea why and is saying it was definitely sent out on Thursday. They use a different company to fullfil the items which Is Cardinalsales and they are saying the same thing. Either they are lying or ups still hasn't scanned the box which I can't see happening. Anyone having issues with their tracking

I'm going to cancel my order with them and get it through Walmart. Got Walmart to match the price and got an extra 10% off so it pretty much was the same price. Won't deal with this company again

I have the epson 3000. Debating the upgrade. I assume it will be huge going from 1080p to the 4k pixel shift.

Not in a perfectly dark room so the 5050ub seems like overlill

If you use it in ambient light, the extra brightness of the 3800 is going to be appreciated. Also unless you have a fully light controlled room, the extra contrast not likely to be noticeable. Note the 40x0 series didn't get a 18Gbps HDMI port until the 4050. Such a port not only is good for gaming, it also is necessarily to get 4K HDR working in certain devices. Also the 40x0 series is a behemoth in terms of size and weight (the 3800 isn't really a small projector either in the first place, but still significantly smaller and lighter).

Lastly, note that the refurb policy for Epson is exchange only, so if you have buyer's remorse for that particular model, there are no returns, although I guess you can get around that buying from other sellers.

I got my projector already. They aren't lying. It has been documented in other threads their supplier is Cardinal Sales (it is drop shipped from there) and they are a legit Epson distributor so the warranty is valid (people have registered in the projector forums). The UPS tracking for mine says it came from Cardinal Sales.
