Man, I wish I had all the money in the world to buy these color changing ones both 5/6in and 4in ones. I just replaced 60% of my house with retrofitted LED recessed lights (non-smart, warm white) but I still have exterior soffit lights and kitchen to go. I already have SmartThings and Alexa ecosystem. Looking back maybe I should've waited but then again 50 of these will cost me so much and my wife would be soo mad at me
Wiz likes using your wifi connection versus zigbee. I would personally prefer lights to be on zigbee to reduce wifi congestion. Hue lights tend to be insanely stable and work well. If it was a few lights I might go for a wifi bulb, if it was a large number of lights I would go hue/zigbee or thread.

I try to avoid extra wifi devices if possible, but sometimes they might be the only option.

Put in some Lutron Casetas and Picos. Game changing.
I have mostly Caseta but the living room and some areas philips hue for colorful reasons.

Most have a mix of both.

Rip-off to pay this much for wifi bulbs. Not a slick deal. Try some alternative brands, they're just wifi/rgb bulbs, tons of other brands work just fine.

Just do it, your wife will get over it and praise you for being a man later for not listening to her.

Is there any reason to get these over the Philips Wiz can lights? I am in the middle of a reno and have been watching the price on both. I would need around 25, so the Hue lights are a big expense to stomach. The Wiz lights can also do color, but will have a different app. Does anyone have experience with both?
I have experience with both. The hue lights have been a constant performer for me for years and can't recommend them enough.

I tried the wiz and returned it. Absolute garbage compared to hue line. Do it right and go with hue especially if you're doing so much. You will really regret wiz for such a product.

I got the Wiz can lights for $17 at Home Depot, and I was hoping to use then instead of the $65 Color Hues.

I really dislike the Wiz. I ended up getting the Hues to replace them.

The color quality is lower. You can see the individual LED chips through the diffuser. It uses a different app and though they have similar-but-differently-named colors (e.g., cozy == relax), the firmware is terrible. For example, when switching to Cozy, the lights go red for a few hundred milliseconds as it dials in the color. It does that for some of the other colors, too, It pulls the colors in step by step instead of smoothly. I have no idea why. I even tried to open a case with them and they were totally useless about it.

If you can stand the lower quality color and diffused and the weird color transitions, the Wiz are a GREAT deal. I even like the Wiz remote better, and they both work fine with Alexa.

I was just really disappointed with the Wiz units. The jarring color changes were the ultimate dealbreaker.

I ended up butting the Wiz lights in a lower traffic area, hoping for a firmware update some day. But they are definitely lower quality.

Can I install like 6-8 of them under one light/power switch and then create zones using the app? I have a recessed ceiling in my living room and those would be a nice upgrade if I can control all of them separately. So if I watch TV I can just have 2 of them on.. and when I need light I use all 6 or so…

Thanks

How do these work? Do they always need power, aka the light switch needs to remain in the "on" position? Or can you use the light switch to turn them on/off AND the app/voice assistant to control them on/off as well as to change their color?

Same here. I use Hue for the accent lights/lamps. Lutron for the recessed ceiling lights and exterior lights.

Yes switch needs to remain on. If off, you can't control the light.

You can turn on/off through app, that turns the light off but the hue light will still have electrical power in order to communicate

What is reflector trim? How does that effect LED bulbs?
