You're comparing a custom built race car that requires an immense amount of knowledge, time, resources, troubleshooting, dedication, etc, to a production car with a warranty and service department.
Most people just want a QC tested point and click that just works, and don't want to have to learn Linux/networking/programming just to troubleshoot a simple plex issue. Personally, I know everything I need to know to run a FreeNAS setup, and I choose Synology because my time is valuable, and I'm willing to spend the extra to avoid just having to do it myself. Just like I also know how to build a car, but I sure as shit am just going to buy one off the lot instead of dropping a crate motor in a custom chassis.
But sure, FreeNAS is great *presuming you are technically savvy enough to handle that entire stack

Thanks for this. Read this and had the natural question of why 20GB? Specs say two memory sticks but just read one is soldered and inaccessible. Can only swap the one reachable inside the device near the drive slots. Just putting this here for anyone else wondering.
