Made in China FYI
I consider it a deal breaker and wouldn't order it based on that- doesn't make it not a good deal based on previous pricing . Put it this way- they literally put made in Japan on the others for a reason. The Chinese ones aren't as good from my research to date.
Bought this last year for $94.99 and have absolutely no regrets. Cooks excellent rice and porridge. If you're looking for a Zojirushi that's made in Japan, you're not getting it for $99.99.

unironically though if I'm only cooking rice once a week, should I get this? I've always wanted one since cooking on the stove feels so messy, but wondering if this is something worth sticking on the counter

True. No point adding garbage to the board only because you think someone else is going to come and add more garbage to it. That results in MORE garbage, not less.

As far as this rice cooker goes, I think it's the same model we bought last year and we love it. The default ratio for white rice was a little too wet for our tastes. After tweaking it a little, we now get perfectly cooked rice every time.

For anyone curious, I think the initial ratio was 1 full "cup" of white rice using their little plastic cup and fill the water to the 1 line. We simply started using one real cup (via measuring cup) with water to the 1 line and it's perfect.

I'm one of those instant pot folks. Didn't realize there were rice cooker purists out there but somehow doesn't surprise me, as Slickdeals seems to draw cult purists for pretty much any product you can think of. 🤣

But seriously, as a n00b, are these really much better at cooking rice compared to my instant pot? Is it actually worth the separate purchase? Genuinely curious because I do sometimes have issues with the rice coming out "oatmealy" if I use too much water.

I got the IH version for myself and one for my dad. The 5 cup one is really small.... I got the 10 cup version. Its the size of the standard rice cooker that I have always used.

For what reason it isn't as good compare to ones from Japan? If it's the same company, aren't their quality the same? Even if it's made in Japan, I would believe some of its components are from China.

So why should I get this over using my stove top pressure cooker? Do one to one ratio, use a metal bowl to make clean up less, just have to clean the bowl not the pot, and comes out perfect each time with 6 mins on high and 10min natural release. Usually make basmati rice for myself and Spanish rice for my dog. Will this be easier or quicker to use? Will the rice come out better? TIA

Question for very specific use case,
hopefully someone can chime in.

Looks like warmer function is at 140 F, like other Zojirushis.

My 96 year old grandmother brews these ginseng herbal drinks and leaves stove on for hours unattended on low heat. Its scary and shes a stubborn chinese lady (bless her).

I got her Zoj rice cooker, and shes acclimated with the buttons. Was thinking of her using this as her go to for her ginseng so she can avoid any stove mishaps. I've tried to get her on thermals (coffee), zoj water boilers, slow cookers, etc. All have been forcibly returned, I'm at my wits end.

Methinks if she has this on her small apartment this might be a good alternative. Would love to hear any recommendations.

🙏 guys. ❤️

Tough call. It's basically foolproof, but if you don't eat a lot of rice, there really isn't a point.
Personally, I have the next size down (3-Cup) and that's more than enough for my family: https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-...01EVHWNQQ/

But obviously the 5.5 is on sale and that one is not. With the 3-cup, you can make as little as a half-cup of dry rice which is like a single serving. Minimum for this one is double that (1 cup).

This also has a steam basket and the 3-cup does not. So if you liked steam veggies, you could do that. And this one has a cake setting (never used it on my other zoji with that setting).

If you want to try steel cut oatmeal or porridge, there's a setting for that too. I make steel cut oatmeal occasionally in mine...just put it in night before, set timer and it's ready at breakfast.

Not trying to justify this for you, but it is more versatile than just rice.

The design of this Zojirushi is just very old. I'm sure it works fine and I gave one to my sister at $150. Costco has better ones such as https://www.costco.com/tiger-5.5-...10800.html .

I got this a year and a half ago and it has worked perfectly well. My wife is Japanese, with high standards regarding rice, and just last night commented how good the rice was. This is small, but for 2 of us, or 3 when our son visits, it is completely adequate, and I haven't wished for a larger one.

We just make rice, brown and white, and don't really use other functions. I tried steel-cut oats. It takes a long time (60 or 90 minutes if I recall properly), and ends up more like porridge, We like our oats firmer, and they take 10 minutes on the stove, so we use this only for rice.
