New member = not a member within last 6 months. A way to bypass this is alternate between yourself and significant other/family member as primary and use a different email.

Pretty good deal, though. WIfe & I sign up on alternate years, so we always get free or almost free membership. Yu just have to remember to cancel the auto-renew.

For myself, sams club sent me an email which stated:
Get your gift card in the club.
Show this offer at your club's membership desk.
Associate instructions:
Use the activation code #12502 and gift card #980299084.
I am not sure if the activation code and/or gc # have changed.
