Bought an open box excellent Elite V2 and it had a smelly substance on it and was definitely not Excellent. So hit or miss but doesn't hurt to try.

Some people just pull stunts like having people over and buying extra controllers to play a couch co-op game and then return it when everyone leaves. There are also some that just doesn't like the colors in person. Some have buyer's remorse and decides to wait for a discount. There are a lot of reasons to return including drift but I wouldn't count on a majority being a drift problem.

every day on sd i learn something, for example the first scenario you described here.

my mind is still blown that that's the solution to not having enough controllers.

Though I personally never do it, I'd assume it can only happen a few times tops. Patterns is what gets people caught for abusing the system.
