Just in time for the holiday weekend, here's my UPDATED list of SUPER GREAT AWESOME cheap ebooks. As you can tell, I'm really excited by all the positive feedback I've been getting here at slickdeals. I'm glad so many readers find these deals and descriptions useful. My book club has been around for a few years and we have a lot of good recommendations. We always have 2 or 3 books going at once to keep people interested and we love great cheap books!

Starting with a few of my current faves. I'm keeping these near the top so long as they're still 99 cents! If you haven't grabbed these books yet now is the time.

1. Dead in Dublin: A Charming Irish Cozy Mystery

Another cozy mystery! Who doesn't love these? This one is set in Dublin Ireland and there's murder and mystery and dogs. The author knows the setting and those details really make the story pop alive. It's a quick breezy read that will make you want to try the whole series I think. I did!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q3NPNFB

2. Severed Knot

Ok here comes a historical thriller set in 17th century Barbados. The author is an expert on the period and the story is filled with details that will make you forget where you are while you're reading it. To be honest, I didn't even know there was an English Civil War so I learned something LOL. But seriously, this is story has some tears in some ways but the plot and characters are worth the ride.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T51WMJQ

3. Last Train to Cairo

I'm excited about this book and recommend it to anyone. It's a travel story like Bill Bryson might write, a little bit funny and the trip doesn't always go right. You'll learn a lot about visiting the pyramids and other places you might not have heard of. Some are great and some aren't but the book is a very honest and fun look at Egypt. I hope you like it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093YSBCD7

4. The Michigan Murders: The True Story of the Ypsilanti Ripper's Reign of Terror

I'll say it again: true crime is always sad. The people discussed in this book were murdered and that's terrible. But it's also part of our history and we have to remember the good and the bad I think. The story isn't well known outside of Michigan but the book is researched and well written so I think I's a good candidate for summer reading.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DJWSY3K

5. The Good, the Bad, and the Pugly: A Little Tombstone Cozy Mystery

Ok, this has the cutest title ever and that's all I needed to know when my club picked this ebook a couple years back. I love the setting and the premise and the characters. What a fun read! And it's Book 1 of 5 but for once all the books in the series are only 99 cents each. Definitely happy to recommend this book and the whole set as a GREAT deal. Hope you love it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9VZZ63

OK, those are my personal faves this summer. Now for the rest of the best in no particular order:

6. Someday, Someday

I don't read a lot of romance stories. Let me put that up front. But this one comes from Carrie in my book group and I love her like my own sister, so when she says try this book I did. This isn't just a love story. The characters have lived some hard lives and their struggle comes through in every chapter. Not gonna lie, I held back some tears on this one.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08192QSMM

7. Justin Hall Spy Thriller Series Box Set Books 1-3

This is a great trilogy for fans of thrillers, spy, action, murder, mystery books. In other words this book set has it all. It's not Shakespeare (I say that a lot don't I?) but it's fun and it's a quick read for a long hot summer. Grab a drink and start reading!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GQOJCMG

8. Impeachment: A Novel

This book is very current and depending on your political leanings you may or may not like this one. It's political satire and social commentary and a little bit heavier than a lot of the books I like to read. But with everything going on in the world I gave it a try. The book is well written and easy to read so worth a try I say. I hope you agree.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HR1CF8B

9. The Trial of Andrew Johnson: Biography of the Reconstruction Era President

Here's another one asking for trouble. It's a reprint of a 1977 biography about our first president to be impeached. The first edition came out when the country was still talking about Nixon! So here we are talking about impeachment these days but let's not forget what life was like after the Civil War. It was a tough time on all fronts. This book is short and maybe outdated in some ways but the story is important so give it a read this summer.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08PVL5D1Q

10. The Time Bubble

Ok, so I have a friend who swears by time travel books. I'm not at all into the genre except maybe for The Time Machine but that one's a classic. So my friend recommends this series for teens and tweens. Well, there's no teens and tweens in our group so I haven't read any of these books. Just being honest. But each book in the series in 99 cents so maybe it's good for the younger readers in your family?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L3K1B8G

11. Matt Kincaid: The Reluctant Lawman: A Western Adventure

Here's another Western from my personal reading list. The author has a folksy voice and knows the ropes (literally) of a good yarn. I said before, I got into Westerns with my dad a long time ago so I still pick up these books and think of a different time and place in my life and in the world. PS: this is part of a series and again each book is only 99 cents!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LQVSNS2

12. The Cruise of the Corwin: Journal of the Arctic Expedition of 1881 in Search of de Long and the Jeannette

Wow. All I can say is wow. This is a true life story written by John Muir the 19th century naturalist. It's about his trip to find and maybe rescue a crew lost in the frozen ice of the arctic. His detailed diary is compelling. I won't say much about what happens on his trip but it's a page turner.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCNH9OX

13. America's Test Kitchen Potatoes 20 Ways: Baked, Fried, Mashed, Smashed, and more

Full disclosure: this book is actually 2.99 and I hope that's OK. I'm giving it an Honorable Mention in my list of 99 cent books because it's really good. It's a great cookbook all about potatoes and it comes from the makers of one of my favorite TV shows. These men and women really know what they're doing and if you wanna try some potato recipes grab this book.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072LC2QR1

14. Loch Down Abbey: Downton Abbey meets locked-room mystery in this playful, humorous novel set in 1930s Scotland

This book is EXACTLY what you think it is: a funny take on Downton Abbey and those British mysteries you grew up with. It's fun to read, real quick too. I never give spoilers so that's all I can say. Please don't read the reviews, some give away plot points!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X4BB5TN

15. The Cabin at Jackson Hole: A Frontier Story

This one tugs at my heartstrings because I love the Old West. I used to watch all the westerns on TV with my dad back when they were popular. This book is well written and interesting. Great story of a woman experiencing hardships in Wyoming way back when. Certainly not a Romance or Mystery. A very engaging story that my club recently recommended and I was glad to try.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XJY4FFK

16. You Only Live Once (A James Flynn Escapade Book 1)

Ok, this one IS for fans of James Bond. It's a comedic and often vulgar take on the spy genre. Lots of action and a moving story. Not for everyone of course but if you can get past the cursing the story is fun and funny. I'm no prude so I was able to enjoy the story and I hope you will too.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0849SM8D4

17. The Fiesta Burger Murder (A Burger Bar Mystery Book 1)

First in a series of easy-going enjoyable mysteries. It reminded me a lot of TV detective shows like Murder She Wrote. Doesn't ever get too heavy. Perfect for a Sunday morning read on the porch! This one will make you want to try the rest of the series I think.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JQHB15

18. On the Way to Casa Lotus: A Memoir of Family, Art, Injury, and Forgiveness

This one might make you cry and smile at the same time! It's a very recent memoir that my book clubber Rosa suggested to us. It's a well written true story of one woman's illness and the consequence of treatment. The way this woman approaches life and tells her story is great. It's like watching an episode of Oprah Winfrey. Check it out.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T6JZKN4

19. The Long Road Home: An account of the author's experiences as a prisoner-of-war in the hands of the Germans during the Second World War

This one comes to the book club from Rachel. Her dad was a Sargent in the US army during WW2 and this book was very moving to her. It's a true story of a British soldier captured at the start of WW2 and held for 5 years as a POW. Bless him and all our men and women in the service for their sacrifice. This is an amazing story. Please read.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085QB4STP

20. Drive for Dough (A Lena Bettencourt Golf Novel Book 2)

The Rebel Nun changed price real quick so I had to remove it. But here's another story by the same author. Very different! This is a contemporary story of a 50 something woman who runs a business, plays, golf, and takes on the world. It's realistic and nice to see a strong female lead from a different angle even though the title is kinda corny. PS: this is Book 2 but Book 1 seems not to be available for awhile.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CIG8EEC

21. The Scarlet Dress

A mystery ghost story in a gorgeous setting by a respected author. Don't read the reviews, some people are just looking to complain. This one is just a few months old and in my club's queue. We read another book by the same author and can't wait to get to this one. No spoilers please!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0882TPKW6

22. Ocean Bliss and Grisly Bits: A Molly Grey Cruise Ship Cozy Mystery

I read this one last year when I was planning my cruise just before covid canceled my plans. This is like a light episode of Murder She Wrote or some other fun, easy going mystery show. It's quick and breezy and I wish I were on a hip right now reading it again! Oh well. Maybe next year.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z3ZMGHS

23. Squashed Possums: Off the beaten track in New Zealand

Ok, this is a weird but funny book. It's got a different and off-beat sense of humor that you'll either love or not. It starts off with a disclaimer that story isn't entirely true but in fact it mostly is. That's the set up and the author never really stops with that kind of laugh. I enjoyed reading this and learning a bit about New Zealand along the way. Book is 99 cents on Kindle and worth the money. Warning: the format on Kindle isn't always perfect. Not sure how that happened.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U8S10GM

24. Down and Out in Paris and London: George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London

This is a classic travel / biography by the famous George Orwell. The story (which is more journalism than fiction) describe poverty in 1920s and 30s Europe. It's well written and interesting especially if you like his other writings. Similar to Hemingway and Steinbeck with the social commentary. It's a classic so it might be free in your library or 99 cents for an ebook.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCE3MZK

25. Go North, Young Man: Modern Homesteading in Alaska

Here comes another great true story. This one is a young man who comes home from the war but isn't sure of what to do with his life. He heads up to Alaska builds a cabin and lives there for a few years. The descriptions are colorful and folksy and so much fun to read. And with the temperature rising this time of year Alaska sounds pretty good right now lol.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XFQ13FM

26. This Alien Earth: The Complete Series: A Dystopian Sci-fi Box Set

Another one my son suggested. He's really into solid sci fi like The Martian and Interstellar. You know, stuff that holds up to some scrutiny as for science. Not my genre so I can' so much about it, but he liked it and maybe you will too?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XKF36R9

27. Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen

This one is almost sad. I'm not into politics so I was surprised by the history of Hawaii I read here. I always thought that the queen gave the islands to America. That's the story I was taught in school a long long time ago. This book proved me wrong! This book was written by the last queen of Hawaii over 100 years ago. It'll give you a LOT to think about.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZFUM2T

28. Death by Honeybee

Had this one listed on my free ebooks thread but the price is now 99 cents so I moved it here. This is a fun mystery, easy to read, and leads up to the rest of the series. Give it a try but don't read the reviews (too many spoilers).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UV988Q

29. Adventures on 'The Way': 1100 miles on the Camino de Santiago

This is another interesting book about an author and his wife who take an adventure together. I like these stories!! Kind of like "Last Train to Cairo" also on this list. This one covers the famous pilgrimage across Spain that people take every year. It's a detailed and interesting account of the trip and I recommend it.

Thanks for all your hard work compiling this list. I somehow got assigned the difficult task of keeping my 96 yo MIL supplied with new Kindle books and this is a big help. She likes cozy mysteries (especially with animals in them) and also stories that take place in countries she's visited, so some of these sound like something she might enjoy. Ty!

Only one book changed price the last couple days so I deleted it. That's actually pretty good! Last week 12 ebooks jumped the same day I posted them. Wow!

I'll put up a new list of cheap ebooks in a couple days. Until then I hope you find something on this list that you like.
