Just checked the RMA page on VIP's website and it shows:
I got the 3200G because A) after watching some YouTube reviews, I figured it would hold my oldest daughter over until I was able to get a 1650; B) by the time I got around to putting that rig together in May of last year, the magical 1600AF that I bought for ~$80 was going for more than double that price. And I said "No, I can't possibly spend more than $100 or so on a processor, I've always built pretty good rigs and never paid more than $130 for motherboard and CPU combined". Stupid, stupid me.
Didn't even get as far as playing Minecraft. I built it quickly, my oldest daughter (16YO when I assembled it) tried playing Fortnite (because that's what all three daughters were obsessed with at the time). She came upstairs and said "it's so laggy, I can't even play"; I logged in and adjusted to lower visuals, said "Yup, this sucks", played with drivers for a bit, then decided to try installing the RX 580 that I thought was dead (the Dell it came in wouldn't boot with it installed). It worked, so I decided that a 580 with a 3200G was practically sacrilegious, so I switched it with the 370 that was in the 1600AF.
To be fair to the processor, though, it *MIGHT* have worked well had I spent some time on it, and it works fine now with the R7 370. At the time I put it together I had three kids at home ALL THE TIME (not that I was different than anyone else) because of the wonderful social experiment that we've all gone through in the past year-plus. I just wanted to have three gaming-ish computers working all at the same time, so I didn't spend time I normally would have, figuring out why it lagged so much. This YouTube video (and others) shows it doing pretty nicely at 1080p: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oz04RW
It seems like it is irrelevant now with them pulling the packages back, but I really appreciate the write-up. It sounds like we were in a very similar place, but I just used Shadow (tech) and Nvidia GeforceNow for most of my kids gaming needs during that experiment. The household has been chewing them almost 2 TB of data a month.
Shadow went from 12.99 to 29.99 a month and performance started tanking, so it was time to just build a system that would handle the task. Like you, I have a stack of old video cards that have been collected over the years as well as a stack of gaming laptops. Although, the stack of video cards is down significantly as friends and family have been in need of cards and they were just collecting dust.
btw, I had a RX390 that I could have sworn was bad, but I gave it to a friend for a co-workers PC for a kid and it worked fine. Those RX cards ran so darn hot and pulled soo much power that premature failure was common.
