I mean, if you need the bigger screen it's not a bad deal, but *looks at M1 iMac for roughly the same price*

This will be obsolescent within months; the new OS coming this Fall will have features NOT supported on this machine.

Buy M1 if you want a Mac.

I wanted one too but unfortunately M1 for 27 isn't coming for a while. RAM is soldered into the M1 chip and that needs to be resolved before they will release the M1 27".

If a lot of good features aren't going to be supported, I'll just buy the 27" Dell all in one for my son. Esp with the new discount. 1TB ssd, better CPU, better game support - - perhaps it's better for him

For me - I will wait for the Mac pro laptop in fall.

If your son needs games, PC is still the way to go.

I bought the new Mac Mini for a family computer (and attached an old monitor.) My kid laments the fact that some of the games she wanted to play are only on PC. I told her to save up her own money then. LMAO

The GPU is much inferior to the 4GB Radeon Pro 5300 Graphics that comes on the iMac

I don't like the M1-on-chip SSD with the new Mac and the Security chip that stop booting from an external disk.

I know the new features listed on a Monterey M1 are very cool but missing them on an intel iMac is better than a worn-out SSD and 8G of RAM with no upgrade path.

Please let me know if my assumptions are wrong with the on-chip RAM and SSD for the M1 Macs.

i don't think the SDIMM will ever come back to Mac again. (Due toe the new SoC design). RAM worked totally different now. (think like Electric Car vs. Gas Engine car)

Can you put this in layman terms, pls? Are you saying Memory will not be upgradeable going forward, like the current 27" models?

That's my concern too. M1 chips are all-in-one package, per a rep I spoke to couple of days back. Hence RAM on 24" cannot be upgraded, unless offered by Apple. While I can understand the pain with SSD upgrade, RAM upgraded seemed pretty painless, why may not happen if everything is packaged together.

Unsure if 27" is also headed that way or not. Hope not. No timeline though for the new 27" at all, I think. Others may know more.

Apple has not announced an upgrade path for the M1 SSD/RAM unless you buy them at initial purchase. I believe that is a fact that everyone can agree to.

If the newer high performance M1X/M2 needs to maintain the M1 Performance, it will have an on-chip RAM/SSD as well. the likely hood of any memory module for that is low since off-chip RAM will have significantly slower access than on-chip. Memory access latency should be uniform across all primary RAM modules. So my bet is you have to buy that during initial purchase as well.

These older iMac can support 128G of RAM via SODIMM DDR4.
With my daily use, I may not need all the 2D / 3D, picture manipulation cool features of Monterey but I do appreciate the extra RAM for Google Chrome or other memory-hungry apps...

I am slowly talking myself into an older iMac

You did say layman terms......

The expandable memory modules and ability to boot from an external NVME disk like the current 27" are the killer features of these intel based iMac IMHO.
