Just for an FYI, the higher the SEER number the more efficient the unit is. A 20 SEER unit is twice as efficient as a 10 SEER.

Those aren't DIY kits and require an HVAC Tech install for warranty. So unless you know how to vacuum lines yourself (which isn't a requirement for the kits the OP posted), you have to also calculate in labor costs. In my area that is at least $1k for a reputable vendor.

How do these mini-splits work? Do I need one in every room?

So 8K is a reasonable number then?
8K would be on the high end but in LA everything's more. You'd have to decide whether doing it yourself with low end equipment or having it done professionally is worth it for you.

Its seriously a crime that the split units available in the US pale in comparison to the amazing units available in europe, which are also much cheaper and better.

I lived in europe for 2 years and put 2 samsung units in my apartment for about 500 eur each and they were amazing.

Also, installation is free when bought at a store similar to our best buy or walmart.

I just had a 3 zone triple evacuated and charged with 9 lbs for $1600.
Electric and labor time are your biggest costs.
You can do it all with this unit, so the cost is all it will be if you can do it all yourself.

What's an estimate for a hvac professional to install this on a ground level home?
As opposed to a tree house?

Installed three 12k MrCool DIY mini splits two years ago and they are fantastic. Zero regrets.
Paul, did you use them to cool your home? I am thinking about getting one for my she shed.

I got an 18K mini-split unit installed bottom line price of $1,500 flat. With wifi and remote. (Cooling Only, no Heat Pump).

I then paid the guy another optional $175, which included a concrete mini-slab Hurricane pad and plastic Cover Kit for the line set.

So basically, $1,675 bottom line, which included:
* 18K mini-split (cooling only, no heat pump).
* Hurricane pad.
* Line set Cover Kit.
* Installation.
* He also gave me a 2-year no questions asked warranty, if anything happens he comes out and fixes it.

I ran the electric and a/c disconnect box myself. So maybe another $125 for wire, conduit, disconnect box, breakers, and uses. Later, I also ran a PVC condensation pipe. Because I didn't like the flimsy drain hose it came with dangling around dripping water all over the place. That cost another $15 for the PVC pipe and various elbow connectors.

Not sure why people are being quoted so much to have these installed.

No HVAC pro (except hacks) are installing equipment that a homeowner bought.

I have this exact model. Bought for $1500 on eBay 3 years ago. Installed it myself. Ran on 220v that I installed as well. Has heat pump and wifi too! Can control it with my phone anywhere. Been great in my garage! Easy install just don't let HOA find out cause they will force you to take it out!!

vacuuming lines is not that complex. if you are able to install a split unit yourself, you will have no difficulty doing the vacuuming yourself.

Most people here seem to talk about it's cooling functionality, but can anybody here comment on it's heating capability?

I live in Minnesota, where we have freezing cold winters and blazing hot and humid summers. I'm looking to install this in my insulated 3 car garage - just want to know how efficient this would be compared to the traditional natural gas forced air heaters that most people who live around me have installed. if it can heat well in addition to cooling, then I may have the best of both worlds and be able to utilize this for all seasons...

I installed all the parts of my 3 zone mini split.
But I didn't have the tools for evacuating my system. Vacuum pump, gauges, nitrogen … plus here in the US you need to be certified to charge with 410a. (Even to buy it)

Everyone thinks businesses operate for free. How much are permits for your city? Many HVAC companies require to use permits to avoid issues with cities later. Also reputable HVAC companies don't sell Mr. Cool bargain baseman equipment, look at having a bid given from Costco and they'll set an appointment with a hvac company they deemed quality enough to represent them. They also use Lennox equipment not the stuff you'll see here on slick deals. Remember professional installation IS NOT DIY, you won't have long ass 25 ft of lineset that looks like a weird snake outside your house because you can't braze a line. You'll need to run a 220V line from your main panel adding the disconnect box to cut power, proper removal of condensation as well from behind the unit. Many city codes do not allow it to drop the condensation onto cement. Either a designated line will be made to guide the water into a flower bed, dirt, grass or a French drain will be made into the cement. Not to mention you'll have warranties backed by Costco and the hvac company who performed the installation.

All in all you'll need one person to install (maybe two) to hold the unit while mounting, an electrician to run the dedicated line and move around breakers in your panel if needed and someone to deal with city permits, someone to order the unit and materials needed etc.

Sounds like it can be done for practically nothing doesn't it??
You sound like a union rep. Sorry but it's not rocket science. Do you need some handy man level skills? Yes. I helped my father in law do it, and we did it in a day. Looks great. Functions great.

Definitely one of those situations where over regulation and over certification has distorted the market.
