Here in San Antonio they will give it to you for free but you lose sovereignty over your thermostat

If that happened those people probably didn't read the fine print of their free thermostat. They can't just do that on their own.

Seeing these on ebay as low as $65 new. People probably getting these free and reselling them?

Ours displayed a notification last weekend that our electricity company was reducing the a/c from 4pm-7pm due to high demand.. it was 98° F outside and during the hottest part of the day. We were able to override it, but i could see it being annoying if the notification was missed.
