I know I know…I shucked the Easystore drives and I always shot for the $15/TB mark.

With that said, considering the chip shortage, I am not sure how realistic the $15/TB target price is. Plus, I bought the Synology 4-bay 920+ from a few weeks ago. I started looking into the WD Red Pro, WD Black, WD Gold, Seagate Ironwolf Pro, and Seagate Exos. They are all CMR with 5-year Warranty. I'm really hoping there are better built and more reliable. I value my data - pictures, music, movies, etc. I'd pay a premium for that. For these drives, I'd pay $30/TB.

I was going to buy the WD Ultrastar 6TB for $180 in B&H Video BUT it's OOS. That'd be my preferred choice. For $170, I think this WD black isn't a bad deal.

Get it direct from Western Digital or from Amazon which sells it for the same price.

FYI these make a clicky noise every 10 15 seconds. I thought it was a faulty drive at first so I exchanged for another one and it still does the same thing. Apparently on these 6tb drives the clicky noise comes from a mechanism that keeps the drive healthy or something.

Yup I have an 80gb raptor in my test box that is like 15+ years old.

Run your drives until they die!

All that being said... $170 for a 6tb feels a little steep. I recently had to replace a 6tb drive from my raid and it was like $100ish. Been using that raid for 6 or 7 years now using the cheapest drives I could find (not WD)

Apparently you're not too great at keeping track of context. I was using 6TB versus 14/16TB in my example. 14/16TB would be the "larger formatted drives" I was referring to. Do I need to put that in crayons for you as well? You write and react like a 14 year old so I'm not surprised if you need that extra bit of visual flair to help you digest.

Now moving my stuffs from multiple USB drives to the RAID 5 .

I started off thinking RAID 5 was a great idea but after reading a lot of horror stories I settled on RAID 10. RAID 5 is tempting because you get to use most of your storage but if anything goes wrong that requires a rebuild you may be sorry.

One problem with RAID 5 is exactly this scenario (not saying you were using RAID 5 though). You have a bunch of aging drives in the array and one starts to throw errors. You replace it and kick off a rebuild. The rebuild goes for days hammering all the drives and some of the other drives now start to fail under the pressure. You may think it's coincidence that multiple drives failed at around the same time but it actually makes sense. A rebuild might just be the most intense thing those old drives have been asked to do in years.

Of course, all this has absolutely nothing to do with the original deal.

Microcenter has a similar drive that's a bit cheaper. Does anyone know the difference between this and the one from microcenter? https://www.microcenter.com/produ...hard-drive

Edit: So I bought the one from Microcenter, and they are the same.

Geez Louise Western Digital Store definitely takes their sweet time shipping! I could have lost my entire array in how long they are taking to get this drive to me. Ordered July 9th, the same day my storage had a drive fail and here we are 8 days later. I am glad I jumped the Best Buy Red drive deal which was slightly larger for what I needed, but more importantly arrived within 24 hours after I placed the order (impressed!).The array was safe a couple days after the failure! Murphy's Law would have destroyed my data had I still been waiting on WD Store. The drive has spent the last 2 days in the same UPS center and had another label generated today at that place. I dunno what the heck they are doing, but status says to check back tomorrow for another status. Assuming I get the Black drive I think I am going to just send it back and never count on the WD Store for a high priority drive replacement.
