I'm a noob when I comes to home audio. Is the R line above or below the synergy line? The prices are pretty much the same so it's hard to tell.

Synergy is below Reference (R), which is below Reference Premiere (RP), which is what is mentioned above.

In terms of sound quality, the RP-500 seems to be the best of the RP bookshelf lineup. Check the Cheap Audioman and recent GR research YouTube reviews on the RP-500M and then look at the review of the RP-600M on the Audioscience Review forum and you will see that the RP-500 has a more linear frequency response. I would probably wait for the RP-500M to go on sale….
