Hundreds of these generics are available on Amazon. Impossible to know what you're getting.

hm... 6 for $27 ($4.5 each) for Merv 8
or
3 for $9.50 ($3.17 each) for Merv 5 @Lowes https://www.lowes.com/pd/Filtrete...er/3800417
This is incorrect. Even the worst homes are air tight enough to substantially improve air quality (35% reductions). And newer homes can vastly improve it (95% reductions):

As to whether a portable filter or whole home makes sense, it depends on your use case, home, conditions, and budget. Both will substantially improve air quality.

Depends. If your system can handle the extra airflow restriction of Merv 8 filters, they're going to filter finer particles that will pass through the Merv 5. Most modern furnaces can handle that restriction just fine

Agreed, merv 8 isnt that bad.. now the merv 13-16 those can cause major issues.. such as icing in the summer if your system isnt designed for it.

It's not whether the furnace can handle it, it comes down to what the original Installer determined for the Airflow requirement.

If you go high on merv, you're just wasting money, because typical homes are not airtight enough for the furnace filter to be an effective filter. Outside air is getting in from everywhere.

Higher filtration at the furnace level is just a waste of money. If you want to filter, get a room filter, way cheaper electric bill, way more efficient furnace performance, and way better air quality where you sit.

Not a super bad price but I usually do better than this for MERV 8 on another site that sells discount filters and has frequent cupons, so I wouldn't say this is much of a deal.

What site?

amen, and i learned about all the friggin air gaps on my house during the Texas/Houston winter freeze back in Feb where our gas fireplace in the living room really couldn't keep up due to very cold air seeping in from every nook and cranies, so I did start sealing them and it made about 2 degree F difference before and after in those immediate rooms.

I use these exact 5s for my main return vent - not too much added restriction in addition to my better filter on the furnace.
