Hi Lilyly -

Here's a chart to determine the type of filter you need based on the job you're working:

https://www.uwsp.edu/rmgt/Documen...poster.pdf

Hope this helps
Pretty much any situation that generates lingering airborne dust you are going to want a half-mask respirator like this over a kn95. While kn95 may be adequate in terms of the material's ability to filter particles, the biggest differentiator of the "kn" ratings to the "n" ratings has to do with fitment. "n" rated masks have to maintain a proper seal (and usually technically require an extensive fitting and training process to use appropriately) to ensure that all air entering the mask is forced through the filter material. KN masks are good for filtering occasional incidental directional particles, which is why they've been used for COVID-19 protection, but some portion of the air you are breathing in remains unfiltered, which makes them a poor choice for the types of situations where half mask respirators are generally used.

Edit: I used "n" ratings in my description, whereas the included filters with this mask are "p" rated (which is why they are pink). The only difference there is that the "p" filters are resistant to oil, whereas "n" filters are not. Their ratings are otherwise the same.
These filters also filter vapors so it's good for painting and varnishing.

availability and price.

Not available for shipping, almost no stock and where there is stock, they're $30 for me.

Correct. I'm OSHA certified myself and have been through the fitment process that has to be revalidated each year (including medical screening for ACM related work).

Many hobbies also have P100 needs (rather than N95) because of chemical fumes. For example I do a lot of wood working as a hobby and need specifically P100 filters when apply some finishes like spray lacquer etc. There are also quite a few other advantages of P series filters over N series. Just depends on what you consider "home use".

I know the why so cheap, but where are you finding those prior FDA approved Kn95 5 layer masks for 11 cents each?

The why is because the FDA revoked their emergency approval [fiercebiotech.com] on July 1st.

Meanwhile, electrostatically charged, those do have an expiration date.
