Steam Deck Reservation FAQ
Why is there a reservation fee?
The main reason for reservations is to ensure an orderly and fair ordering process for customers when Steam Deck inventory becomes available. The additional fee gives us a clearer signal of intent to purchase, which gives us better data to balance supply chain, inventory, and regional distribution leading up to launch.

Why is my account not able to place a reservation until Sunday?
We are aware of potential unauthorized resellers, and as an additional safeguard to ensure a fair ordering process, we've added a requirement that the reserver has made a purchase on Steam prior to June 2021 for the first 48 hours of reservation availability.

How does the reservation system work?
When you submit a reservation, you will be put in a queue. Once inventory is available, you will be emailed in the order the reservations were made.

When will I be able to order?
We are aiming to start sending order invitations by December 2021. We will make every effort to convert all reservations to orders but we are not able to guarantee availability.

Can I cancel my reservation?
Yes, you can cancel your reservation on this page. If you cancel within 30 days, you will be refunded to whatever payment method you used. If you cancel after 30 days, your reservation fee will be refunded to your Steam Wallet.

What regions can I reserve Steam Deck from?
Customers in the United States, Canada, European Union, and the United Kingdom can reserve a Steam Deck. Information about expanded regional availability coming soon.

How many Steam Decks can I reserve?
One Steam Deck can be reserved and ordered per customer.

What happens to my reservation fee if I do not order my Steam Deck in time?
Your reservation fee will be refunded in full. If your refund occurs within 30 days of your initial reservation, you will be refunded to whatever payment method you used. If your refund occurs after 30 days of your initial reservation, you will be refunded to your Steam Wallet.

Are there any restrictions on users that can reserve the Steam Deck?
Your Steam account must be in a valid country. Additionally for the first 48 hours of reservation availability your account must be in good standing, and have made a purchase on Steam prior to June 2021.

Do I need a Steam account to use Steam Deck?
The default Steam Deck experience requires a Steam account (it's free!). Games are purchased and downloaded using the Steam Store. That said, Steam Deck is a PC so you can install third party software and operating systems.

What if I'm not able to reserve right now and would like to purchase a Steam Deck in the future?
You may add Steam Deck to your wishlist and we will notify you when it is available for general purchase.

Is the reservation queue regional?
Yes, the reservation queue and expected order availability times are specific to each region.

Can I change which Steam Deck I purchase once I'm able to order?
Once you're able to order, you can only purchase the Steam Deck model that you reserved.

When will I be charged in full for Steam Deck?
Once your reserved Steam Deck is available and you complete your purchase, you will be charged.

Does the reservation fee count towards my Steam Deck purchase price?
Yes.

Valve stopped selling the Steam Controller because they should have never sold it in the first place; they got sued for patent infringement and lost.

The "Steam Machines" were just regular mini-PCs with the SteamOS - Valve didn't make any of that hardware.

Valve didn't abandon SteamLink, they ported it as software to other devices that are more powerful. You can use the software version of SteamLink on Apple tvOS, or Android devices that are much faster than the original hardware.

Thanks for the heads-up. Didn't know Valve was making one. Though I'm conflicted on wheather to get this or the possible Qualcomm console. Decisions, decisions.

I'm excited for this but considering valve abandoned the steam machine, steam controller, and steam link I'm hesitant

Yeah, Valve has a terrible track record with hardware.

Ugh, yeah!
Still gonna throw my money at it though. I do wish they went with a rail system with removable controllers like the Switch however. This thing won't be a Switch killer, but they've got me curious.

Very intrigued by this console. I mean as stated in the question videos on Youtube, you can use this thing like any other PC. So you could login with your Xbox Gamepass and play Xbox games on the go with this. You can download emulators on this, you can play steam games on this, you can play DOTA/LoL on this (wouldn't recommend, but you could).

The potential here is pretty immense.

I don't expect a lot of games to work well out of the box (not performance but compatibility wise), like a dedicated console built for it would be, but I am curious. I say this having a high-end PC that I don't mind spending some time tweaking here and there, but I expect my handheld to "just work" when I pick it up to play on.

When the trailer first dropped for this I said no no no no no like Michael from the office but getting more information yes this looks like an exciting product.

Maybe not at launch but thinking that we can get a product like this 6 months to one year later for about $100 off makes it enticing for a person like me that doesn't need bleeding edge hardware on day one.

Having said that, im not a big fan of the form factor. It just looks way too chunky. Way too clunky. Reminds me of the Sega Game Gear. And not in a good way. I'm not a child anymore. I wish they would have stuck with the Nintendo style and it's detachable controllers and give me a PC on a flat piece of OLED to play with.

I'll be watching for improvements and updates

#rant
Thoughts like that are what people thought for RTX 3000-series cards. Pricing will go up after the initial preorders are sold out. Half will be scalped immediately the rest will cause shortages causing several month order delays (like the Index) causing prices to go up so people won't have to wait.

That said, you will get your $100 off but I'd say it's more ~18 months out.

I don't understand why you would say that as it is quite literally a PC. It's quite simple really, stock OS is Linux so Linux compatible games will play with no tweaking. If you are referring to tweaking such as having to install a different operating system like Windows, I would expect exceptional compatibility. If you plan on sticking with the stock OS I could understand that but I also think this is more of a niche market than a regular console. I am also making the assumption that people investing this much money are probably going to want to tweak with a device such as this.
