Another option is to run it all over with the lawnmower and use the bag for the lawnmower to collect it. Set the mower to the highest setting to help run over and collect

I have this one and it is great. The collection bag is useless as it fills up to quickly. Best to just not use it and rake the dead grass. There are plenty of youtube views on its use...

A crew comes through our neighborhood with a dethatcher about once a year. For my 1/3 acre, they want $65. About every 3-5 yrs, I pay for that service.
In the spring and fall, I use Jerry Baker's Dethatch tonic. https://youtu.be/evMM1ndZEiw

I used this scarifier and it absolutely ripped my lawn to shreds

Ya, just keep in mind that sucker is HEAVY. I did my lawn and was so exhausted at the end. And it had some inconsistent pick up and go, so I almost plowed through a fence. But after I got the hang of it, it did a good job.

Also, make sure to have something good to transprot it and know what to do. I put it in my SUV and the home depot people were not very helpful other than lifting it in. They didnt' have string to tie down and I was about to drive off when I realized if I had to stop realtively quickly the thing woudl either plow into me or through my back window. Went to the main store to get some string to tie it down.

Overall it was a PITA but definitely worth it. It is heavy but my wife and I were able to lift it back into the car after I was done. It has some weights that you can remove to lower the overall weight.
Thanks for the tips! Yeah I had checked on machines site that it could be 200ish pounds or something lol. Wouldn't want that thing on wheels moving around in the trunk for sure!

Until the time comes I bought a manual corer that has decent reviews. Figured I'd give it a whirl in phases and see if that works out at all … maybe post rain. Did you fill in the holes with some sort of fertilizer like milorganite or anything?

Renting from local equipment rental companies if you have ones is better than the big box stores based on my experience. They are much cheaper and their people have more experience.
I'll have to check to see if there are any local ones available haha

I was close to buying one, but then I lucked up and got a free manual one for free. It's gonna suck doing it, but maybe I'll come out on the other side swole from doing my whole yard 😂.

Anyone know How does this one compares to the green works ?
I don't have any experience with these, but I've watched numerous comparison videos on YouTube and the sun Joe always comes out on top. I just ordered one.

This is better than the Greenworks because it has two attachments (dethatcher/power rake and scarifier/verticutter).

The power rake chews through both Bermuda and St. Augustine, but the scarifier will do a lot more damage to your lawn. I used the scarifier on my Bermuda to remove a ton of old thatch and aerate the lawn. It destroyed most of my back lawn but removed all the unwanted thatch. Took 6 weeks to recover. Now it's green, flat, and can breath. It's like having a different lawn. much better. Used the power rake on St. Augustine and it chewed right through it, basically removing 50% of the turf and lifting buried leaves from the thatch layer. The Augustine has fully recovered as well. Thinning it out really helped with the overall health of the lawn.

You will need a 12 gauge electric cord, 50 or 100 feet long. This machine is a beast. Highly recommended.

I was trying to hold out for the Ryobi cordless dethatcher that is supposed to be released in the states soon. Don't love the idea of toting around an extension cord. But my lawn needs a dethatch badly, so I just pulled the trigger on this one.

Does this work on St Augustine or Bermuda grass? Feels like the shoots and structure of the grass would just get pulled up
I wouldn't. It will do more harm than good. Rent a core aerator and criss cross your passes. Also, if you abide by 1/3rd cut rule you shouldn't have thatch problems. I'm taking advantage of the JOEDAY promo to get the battery powered reel. I just started using a manual reel this year. I'm not ready to drop $1k+ on a gas powered reel, but I'll try the Sun joe for $185.

Me and three of my neighbors rent Aerator from Ace which only rent for 4 hrs or 8 hrs time slots that is too much for any of our yards of about 5000 sqft. We split the time/cost and comes out about $12 pp.

I use greenworks aerator I bought on sale for $79 from Lowe's.
My process for reseeding in fall time is
- 3-4 weeks prior spray weed killer
- move the lawn to lowest setting
- run aerator in multiple directions
- use bag mower to collect all the thatch
- water the lawn in the evening prior to aeration to ensure soil is moist but not soggy
- use aerator, add seed, starting Fertilizer, new top soil, and lime
- mix them up with back of the rack and water heavily for next 2 weeks

Tears up your lawn, on purpose. Tilling, aerating, dethatching, scarifying, think of it like degrees of a process. Sort of like polishing, compounding, sanding, or grinding. Different degrees of aggressiveness in disturbing or removing material to expose or reapply selected material in a desired aesthetic.

Yes to grass that died and fell over.

As far as mulch. The grass clippings that are tiny will break down quickly and release nutrients. That isn't thatch. To get those tiny clippings you need a mower with a good, sharp mulching blade and a slow pace when cutting the lawn. The clippings need time to swirl around under the deck while the blade keeps chopping up the grass finer and finer.

If you have a none mulching blade, or a dull mulching blade, and/or you walk too fast while mowing, the clippings will not get chopped up adequately and they will be too big to completely break down. That will be thatch.

If you mow often, slow, and with a sharp blade you will sgnificantly reduce the amount of thatch you have. Not eliminate it though, just reduce.
