Quickie tho - is it impossibly hard to beat the game on normal difficulty if you select a less than optimal party?
Think i recall years ago i quit game out of frustration when i was in a sewer and a pack of these black zombie thingies would just drain all health w/o anything i could do about it (seemingly)

You need the PHB. A little range and some grease spells or a fireball and you'll be right as rain.
This is a bit of a challenge for even experienced players on average, but games with randomly generated rolls and instant kill spells are like that. Part of the fun.
