I just bought at $269.99 from B&H last week. It was the lowest price at the time. Now, Newegg offering even lower in the market!

Great price. Very tempting to upgrade my 1700x to this or maybe a 3900x or 5900. With ddr5 coming so soon it I'm even more torn to wait some more possibly.

I would hold off for AM5 / DDR5 unless you really need the upgrade. Double memory bandwidth on top of another huge leap in clock/IPC will surely be worth it. Applause

And when is that supposed to be released?

In about a year from now... along with RDNA3! Whether that is a long wait is all relative to the individual, but for me that goes quickly. Guess it depends how bad you really need more performance. AM5 will likely be sticking around for 3-4+ years as well.

If upgrading is more of a 'nice to have' than 'holy shit I need a system now', waiting will be worth it. Unless you don't mind upgrading now and then again later next year.

should just get the 5600x at this price unless you really need the extra cores. For gaming 5600x for sure.

Yeah we're at the point where waiting till early next year we will potentially have new socket and DDR5. Windows 11 release and the Valve Steam Deck. If you absolutely need an upgrade, I would wait a wee while longer to extend longevity of your new machine. GPUs are still rough...

Better to wait till 2031 when AM6 and DDR6 with Windows 12. Of course it will be very expensive the first 2 years so you may have to wait to get a good deal Stick Out Tongue

That said, it will take a substantial investment to change your entire setup (including at least CPU and motherboard) to take advantage of the new technology. So unless you're using an old system that badly needs an upgrade, you're likely to get much more bang for your buck by just adding an extra set of RAM modules and a high-quality cooler (for better overclocking) in your existing DDR4 PC for now.

Whilst the benefits that DDR5 offers are exciting, the reality is we will not see PCs begin to utilize these benefits until this time next year, and even then, it is unlikely that we will see CPUs able to fully unlock the potential of DDR5 until beyond 2022. DDR4 was released back in 2014 and we still see some gaming machines using DDR3 to this date, though it is increasingly outdated now. At the point DDR4 was released we did not see much difference from its predecessor in performance, and this was the case for several years. Similarly, DDR5 is unlikely to be widespread in most computers until late 2021, and we can expect DDR4 will still be a big chunk of the market until late 2022.

pay the extra $5 for the 5600X since it has ~18% better gaming performance than the 3700X

Entirely depends (1) if you're gaming on it and, (2) if so, at what resolution. At 4k you won't see an improvement. If you're streaming, the 3700x is better. If you're gaming without streaming at under 4k, yes go 5600x.

For many non-gaming, productivity uses, the 3700x is better. You need to assess your use case.

I think we are just spoiled by Amazon's mostly stellar customer service that when newegg really sucks in that department and something, when problems do occur (and they do) takes a few days for Amazon to resolve it always takes newegg several weeks to resolve

Totally agreed. For gaming the 5600x is way better. And I think for productivity it does pretty good too surprisingly.
